No. 5 Arizona Men Upset No. 4 California and No. 12 Michigan

TUCSON, Arizona, January 5. THE fifth-ranked Arizona men's swimming and diving team improved their record to 4-1 (1-1, Pac-10), upsetting No. 4 California, 124-118 for the first time in 14 years, while also downing No.12 Michigan, 122-121 at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center this afternoon.

"This was a pretty awesome finish for us," head swimming Coach Frank Busch said. "To come from behind and win the meet in the final relay was very exciting. This is a hard time of year for the kids because the only thing they do is eat, sleep and swim every single day, which makes them pretty flat. But I am very proud of the guys and the way they hung in there."

Note: All events were timed in Long Course Meters

Starting off the meet for the Wildcats was the 400-meter medley relay team of juniors Albert Subirats, Ivan Barnes, Darian Townsend and senior Adam Ritter, which won the race with at time of 3:50.50

Junior Matt Biel picked up a second place finish in the 800-meter free with a time of 8:29.33. In the 200-meter free, freshman Jean Basson finished second with at time of 1:54.91 and sophomore Nicolas Nilo finished fourth (1:56.09).

Subirats finished second in the 50-meter free with a time of 23.74 and Townsend finished first in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:08.87.

Three Arizona swimmers placed in the top-four of the 100-meter free, as Nilo finished second (51.65), Ritter finished third (52.06) and freshman Jordan Smith finished fourth (53.43).

Freshman Jake Tapp finished third in the 200-meter back, while Biel finished third in the 400-meter free (4:04.57). In the 200-meter breast, sophomore Josh Arreguin posted a second place finish with a time of 2:26.19.

The 400-meter free relay team of Subirats, Nilo, freshman Joel Greenshields and Townsend finished first in the event to win the meet for the Wildcats with a time of 3:25.88.
