No. 2 Texas men’s Swimming and Diving Defeats No. 16 Georgia; No. 5 Women Down No. 8 Florida

AUSTIN, Texas – Each competing in their second dual meet in as many days, the No. 2-ranked University of Texas men's and No. 5 UT women's swimming and diving teams both captured home dual meet victories over top 25 teams on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. The Texas women's squad opened the day's action with a victory over No. 8 Florida, 173-126, while the UT men's team followed with a 135.5-101.5 win over No. 16 Georgia. The win improves the women to 7-2 in dual meet competition and the men to 3-1.

The Longhorn women were led by junior-transfer Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore/California), who tallied three individual victories on the day. Yeo placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (54.83), as well as the 100 (1:03.17) and 200 (2:17.78) breaststroke events. All three times were NCAA "B" consideration times.

Juniors Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.) and Erin Phenix (Cincinnati, Ohio) also gave significant contributions to the UT win by each posting two top finishes. Jamison claimed top honors in the 100 (55.96) and 200 (2:00.74) backstroke, while Phenix touched first in the 50 (23.40) and 100 (50.13) freestyle. All four times were NCAA "B" cuts.

Freshman diver Nicole Pohorenec (Winter Springs, Fla.) gave the Texas women an added advantage on the boards, placing first on both the one-meter (264.45) and three-meter (275.32) springboard events.

"I am very proud of the way our team has performed this weekend," co-head women's coach Jill Sterkel said. "Both of the wins were definitely a team effort, with everybody taking part. In order to reach our goals this season, we have to have the kind of participation and energy that we showed today. When things were down, our team kept fighting and showed an overall willingness to have fun and let it all hang out. To come out of this weekend with two wins against the teams we have faced is a great accomplishment."

The men's squad was led to victory by the efforts of five different individual race winners and the performance of senior diver Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.).

Dumais, the two-time NCAA Diver of the Year (2000, 2001), led Texas on all springboard events for the second straight day, winning on the one-meter (380.47) and three-meter (440.17). Both scores were season-high marks for Dumais.

Junior Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) got the Horns going early in the 200 freestyle, placing first with a time of 1:38.67. Senior Leffie Crawford (Pacifica, Calif.) followed with a top performance in the 50 free (20.75), while senior Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md.) touched first in the 200 fly (1:46.73). Sophomore Tony Diers (Houston, Texas) added to the Longhorns lead by winning 100 free in 45.43, followed by sophomore Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) who rounded out the UT top finishes with a victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.02).

"It was great to see our team come back today and perform the way they did," head coach Eddie Reese said. "The whole lineup showed some good swims and I am happy to see the team's improved effort. Hopefully this win can build our team's momentum heading into the second half of the season."
