No. 10 TEXAS WOMEN TO SEND EIGHT SWIMMERS TO 1999 NCAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

AUSTIN, TX – The University of Texas women’s swimming and diving team, which won its first conference championship as a member of the Big 12 on February 20, will send eight swimmers to compete at the NCAA Championships. The Horns will also look to send up to four divers to the NCAA meet, which will be contested March 18-20 at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the University of Georgia campus in Athens, Ga. The divers compete this weekend (March 12-13) in Fayetteville, Ark. to determine the region’s diving representatives.

The Longhorns will have three swimmers competing in the maximum three individual events, led by senior Erin Maher (Richardson, Texas / Berkner). The Outstanding Swimmer of the Big 12 Conference Championships, Maher will swim the 50-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. The 13-time All-American won individual Big 12 titles in the 50 free and 100 back in February and holds the second-best time in the country in the 50 free entering the meet (22.56).

Sophomore Colleen Lanné (Tucson, Ariz. / Salpointe Catholic) will join Maher in the 50 and 100 free and will swim in the 200 free as well. Lanné earned five All-America certificates as a freshman last year and was runner-up in all three events at the Big 12 Championships last month.

Junior Ariadne Legendre (Montreal, Quebec / College Ahuntsic), the two-time Big 12 champion in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley, is entered in those events as well as the 200 butterfly. Legendre earned four All-America honors a year ago. The remaining Longhorn contingent consists of junior three-time All-American Shona Kitson (Windsor, Ontario / Vincent Massey), who will compete in the 100 and 200 butterfly; freshman Kelley Robins (Houston, Texas / Awty International) in the 100 backstroke; freshman Courtney Timmons (Gainesville, Fla. / Buccholz) in the 100 and 200 backstroke; freshman Stephanie Jenkins (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) in the 100 and 200 breaststroke; and freshman Lauren Martin (Houston, Texas / The Bolles School [Jacksonville, Fla.]), who will swim on the 200 freestyle relay with Lanné, Kitson and Maher.
