New Year’s Resolutions From Swimming World College Interns

new-year-resolution

PHOENIX – This year, Swimming World welcomed a large cast of college interns from throughout the NCAA and NAIA landscape. With the New Year coming up, we’ve asked our interns to provide their New Year’s Resolutions for 2015.

The new interns have definitely added a bunch of content our readers are truly enjoying.

Kelsey Lynch

My New Year’s Resolution is to write every day whether it be for work or in a journal, so that I can watch my daily, weekly, and monthly progress throughout the year.

Emma Gresser

My New Year’s Resolution is to look at life from a more positive perspective.

Jessica Drogemuller

My resolution is to streamline and organize my life and keep it that way as long as possible.

My New Year’s Resolution is to make a conscious effort everyday to live in whatever moment I am in… To not worry about things I can’t control. If I’m in class, be in class, note taking, etc…if I’m at practice, be in practice, not worrying about school or anything else…if I’m with friends, be with them.

James Sica

My New Year’s Resolution is to a read a book a week during the new year.

Luke McGuire

I’m aiming to break 1:00 in the 100 breaststroke in 2015, and get into Yale Law School.

My New Year’s Resolution is not to take any 400 IM, 5am practice, test set, or anything in life for granted because in the future I will be wishing I could do it all again!

As 2015 rapidly approaches I find it important to reflect on your past year so you can be sure of what you want your New Year’s Resolution to be. One aspect that I find myself never to be lacking in is the amount people in my life who have positively influenced me.  I am extremely blessed to have wonderful family, friends, teammates, coaches, professors and many more who have stood by me and encouraged me as I progress with my young adult life. Due to this I have decided to dedicate 2015 to these people, so I may give them my thanks and try to repay a fraction of what they have so happily done for me.

I have never been one to create a single specific New Year’s Resolution or decide to wake up January 1 to begin an alternate life style. However, I do look to evolve and move forward. The last couple weeks of 2014 I like to begin my reflection period. A time when I read through old journals and notebooks, celebrate past accomplishments, think back to the beautiful and horrific moments over the past year and ponder how they have shaped me. I stop and think about what is different about me from the start of 2014 to now. After having finished up my first semester of college I can list many things I need to work on for a more graceful and pleasant year and life before me.

In 2014, I turned 18 and did not ease into adulthood, I jumped into it with everything I had and in that lost a grip on the little daily activities that made me happy. I started to become more of a perfectionist, focusing more on my athletics and academics than my actual livelihood and well-being. I felt as though I needed to give up small daily rituals to have more time for my new adult responsibilities.

Reflecting back on the year now, I realize that is unhealthy for me. In order for me to remain positive, healthy, and energetic I must seize my youth and use it for my benefit rather then forcing myself to be like the majority of adults in my life. I now realize that I cannot be perfect, that this life is not meant to be lived fulfilling anyone’s definition of perfect, but rather thriving in a life you can look back on and feel pleased with. August 15, 2014, the day my family left me by myself in my college dorm with a book by Keri Smith titled Mess, The Manual of Accidents and Mistakes.

I believe my mother left me this in the hopes that I would not let my type A personality completely get the best of me. This journal is essentially about breaking the rules on each page and in result destroying it. Sadly, I did not touch this journal or mess with it once during my first semester:

1. Because I did not want to ruin it or mess it up incorrectly (sad I know, it is literally created to be destroyed)

2. I did not feel that the five minutes it would take me to mess up a page in this journal each day trumped the importance of my homework.

I now realize that these small breaks away from everything are okay and in fact beneficial! This upcoming year I am going to work on loosening my strict agenda and incorporating more time for myself be it to work on messing up this journal or laying down and reflecting on the day for a couple minutes. I am going to focus on my personal health and wellbeing and keep in mind that all you can give is your best each day and that not every day and activity can be perfect. I want to work on stressing out less and enjoying everything more. I am going to focus less on being perfect and highlight more on having fun and enjoying my college years.

By the end of 2015, I am shooting to have a completely wrecked, imperfect journal and a calmer state of mind.
