New Mexico vs. Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyoming, November 5. THE University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team defeated the New Mexico Lobos, 133.5-104.5 on Friday evening in Corbett Pool.

The victory brings the Cowgirls dual record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the MWC. The loss drops the Lobos to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the MWC.

"It was a good meet all the way around, we won virtually every event," UW head swimming coach Tom Johnson said. "We were right on top of some pool records tonight and to be going this fast, this early is very exciting."

The Cowgirls opened up the dual with the Lobos with a victory in the 400 medley relay. The UW ‘A' 400 medley relay team consisting of, Kelsey Conci, Morgan Hartigan, Claudia Carlson and Shelby Bull would have broken a school record if it was not for a false start between the butterfly and the freestyle swimmers. Although they did not break a school record, Coach Johnson was very encouraged that their time was so fast. The Cowgirl ‘B' relay team placed second just behind the ‘A' team getting the win for the Cowgirls because of the disqualification.

After the victory in the 400 relay the Cowgirls never looked back winning every event except for diving. Wyoming's Lizzie Justice won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:46.88. In the 200 freestyle Stephanie Vint picked up the first of her two victories tonight with a time of 1:55.50. Vint also won the 500 freestyle for UW with a time of 5:13.48. Kenzie Hewson also won two events for the Cowgirls, picking up wins in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Hewson won the 50 free with a time of 24.42 and the 100 back with a time of 59.62. Hartigan won the 200 IM for UW with a time of 2:11.83. Following the victory from Hartigan, Bull picked up a win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.09. Wyoming's Kelsey Conci won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.48 just one second off the Corbett Pool record of 51.90. Cowgirl Lesley Young also picked up a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.56. The final race of the evening was the 200 freestyle relay that Cowgirls Conci, Hartigan, Hewson and Bull won with a time of 1:35.14, which was good enough to break the Corbett Pool record of 1:36.50 by a full second.

"New Mexico was a much improved team, it is very hard to bring a team to altitude," added Johnson.

In diving the Cowgirls dove pretty well according to head diving coach Pat Bukowski, but he felt there were many areas they needed to work on. In 1-meter diving action New Mexico's Ashlee Erickson took first place with a score of 304.88, followed closely by Cowgirl Allie Smith who scored 301.73. On the 3-meter springboard Cowgirl Smith and Lobo Aubrey Bush tied for first place with a mark of 301.50.

"We are coming off three weeks of very hard training, and today we saw some really good dives but we also saw a lot of dives we need to work on," Wyoming diving coach Bukowski said. "The good thing about meets is we can really see where we need to improve and against a good team like New Mexico we can really see what we need to work on."

"It was a good day and we swam hard and now we really need to get ready for tomorrow," added Johnson. "It is going to imperative for us to race well tomorrow, there is going to be some very good racing tomorrow against Denver."
