New Mexico Hosts BYU, Northern Arizona, New Mexico State

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, November 3. THE University of New Mexico women's swimming and diving team had a successful night as they played host to BYU, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona in the Seidler Natatorium. The Lobos were victorious over New Mexico State (190 – 103) and Northern Arizona (175.5 – 123.5), but fell to BYU with a final score of 221.5 – 75.5. The Lobos are now 5-3.

Top swimmers for the Lobos included junior Tori Clarridge and senior Jenna Syverson. Clarridge solidified the first place spot in the 100-yard backstroke clocking in a time of 58.03. Syverson took first in the 50-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 24.43. Clarridge also had a third place finish in the 100-yard free (53.28).

The top diver for the Lobos was junior Carrie Quinn who sealed the first place spot on the 3-meter springboard with a final score of 273.25. Quinn also took fourth on the 1-meter board (238.95).

"Carrie (Quinn) did extremely well tonight," diving coach Abel Sanchez said. "It's early in the season and for Carrie to already be diving as well as she has been is a great accomplishment."

The Lobos started off the night with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.49). Freshman Ashley Grisdale, junior Andrea Zarins, Clarridge and Syverson made up the team. Other second place finishers included Zarins in the 100-yard (1:07.36) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.78) as well as Grisdale in the 100-yard butterfly (58.42).

Grisdale also took third in the 200-yard fly (2:08.27) and Zarins in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.89). Freshman Theresa Rogers, senior Kelly Soldow, Clarridge and Syverson comprised the 400-yard free relay team that finished in second (3:34.29), concluding the meet.

"Everyone needed to swim their best tonight," assistant coach Leslie Smith said. "They all swam above and beyond their best and did exactly what they needed to do. All the girls are swimming faster allowing them to finish with better times which is great."

The Lobos are currently four wins ahead of the total wins they had last season. The athletes and coaches are extremely excited and proud of the success they are having thus far.
