New Jersey Puts Limits on Winter H.S. Competitions; No State Champs for 2021

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced on Tuesday that there would be severe limitations on winter sports in the Garden State. The NJSIAA has decided to limit winter sports teams, including swimming and diving, to 15 events per sport. Schools will be limited to two competitions per week, with the exception of two three-competition weeks to account for scheduling difficulties.

The decision to limit schools to 15 competitions does not hurt swimming as much as other sports, notably basketball. A 15-meet swim schedule is hefty for the scholastic level, while basketball teams can play more than 30 games.

The NJSIAA also announced that practices for winter sports can begin on December 3, with the regular season running through February 3. The postseason will held between February 5-17, but playoff competitions will not extend beyond the sectional level. That decision means there will be no state championships.

Additionally, competitions will be limited to two teams, which eliminates the opportunity for schools to participate in invitational or multi-team meets, and there will be no out-of-state travel. The NJSIAA indicated that it will continue to monitor COVID-19 landscape, but any decisions to expand the winter season will not be made until the season is in progress.
