Nevada Tops Idaho on First Day

RENO, Nevada, December 9. THE University of Nevada (14-0) swimming and diving team won the first eight events on Friday evening to knock off Idaho (8-5) 113-84 at Lombardi Pool in Reno, Nev. The meeting is the first of two duals between the two Western Athletic Conference schools, as they square off again on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.

With the victory the Wolf Pack are now 14-0 on the season while the Vandals dropped to 8-5. The Pack had 18 swimmers place in the top three in the dual out of a possible 21 spots.

The Pack relay of Li Bei, Margaret Doolittle, Michaela Schmidt, and Nonie Wainwright started the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley. The team finished the event in a time of 1:48.57. Nevada's "B" relay of Julianne Fritcher, Sarah Shields, Larissa Cadag, and JayDee Huppert placed second in a time of 1:51.73. The Wolf Pack led 15-2 after the first event and never trailed in winning the dual.

Seven individuals won events for the Pack in the meet. Miranda Moore was the first winning the grueling 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:36.27. Junior Bobbie Lee Reese followed with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle then Wainwright captured the 50-yard freestyle.

Doolittle swam the 100-yard IM in 58.81 to win the Pack's fifth event of the day. Schmidt was first in the 50-yard butterfly and Cadag took home top honors in the 100-yard freestyle. Fritcher's first place finish in the 50-yard backstroke helped the Pack clinch the victory.

With the meet in hand Nevada head coach Mike Shrader elected to exhibition his swimmers in the final three events of the meet.
