NCAA Men’s Swimming: No. 2 Stanford Defeats No. 12 Arizona State

Stanford, CA – Junior Adam Messner (Ann Arbor, MI/Dexter HS) won the 200 and 500 freestyles to lead No. 2 Stanford to a 126-116 victory over No. 12 Arizona State Friday afternoon at deGuerre Pool. Stanford improves to 3-2 on the season by winning its first Pac-10 meet of the year. The Sun Devils fall to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-10, with all losses coming to top-11 teams.

The visitors won the 400 medley relay to open the meet and the 400 free relay to close it, but the Cardinal won seven of nine individual swimming events. Stanford’s winners included juniors Steven Brown (Reno, NV/Reno HS) in the 200 butterfly and Rob Canales (San Jose, CA/Bellarmine Prep) in the 200 breaststroke, and freshmen Greg Long (Reston, VA/South Lakes HS) in the 1000 free, Randall Bal (Fair Oaks, CA/Bella Vista HS) in the 50 free and Dan Westcott (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) in the 200 backstroke.
