NCAA Men’s Championships: Leon Marchand Cruises to Top Seed in 400 IM
The 2024 NCAA Men’s Division I Swimming Championships continued from Indianapolis with the Day 3 prelims.
The Day 3 events are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, followed by 3-meter diving.
NCAA Men’s 400 IM
Arizona State’s Leon Marchand predictably took the early lead and hung on for the top seed in the 400 IM.
His first 50 was 22.25 and he was at 47.98 at the 100 and 1:41.95 at the 200 mark of the race.
Marchand, who holds the record at 3:28.82, finished in 3:35.75 to take top seed in the event.
His teammate David Schlicht took the second seed in 3:37.65 as Arizona State took the 1-2 seeds and 14-15.
Florida junior Mason Laur took the third seed in 3:38.31, followed by Ohio State’s Tristan Jankovics (3:38.49), Texas A&M’s Baylor Nelson (3:38.77), Georgia’s Jake Magahey (3:39.02), Florida’s Gio Linscheer (3:39.36) and SMU fifth-year Jack Hoagland (3:39.85).

NCAA Men’s 100 Butterfly
Once again Caeleb Dressel‘s NCAA record is intact, but his pool record went down.
Florida sophomore Josh Liendo threw down a 43.30 to take the top seed into finals, breaking Dressel’s pool mark of 43.58 set in 2017. His NCAA record of 42.80 survived another session.
Indiana senior Tomer Frankel finished with the second seed in 43.90, the only other swimmer in the field to break 44.
NC State senior Luke Miller took the third spot with a 44.06, followed by Arizona State freshman Ilya Kharun (44.50), who was just ahead of Cal senior Dare Rose (44.52).
Virginia Tech senior Youssef Ramadan took the sixth seed (44.58), followed by Michigan’s Gal Groumi (44.62) and NC State junior Aiden Hayes (44.63).

NCAA Men’s 200 Free
American record-holder Luke Hobson was at near-record pace in the prelims.
After breaking the 200 free American record on Wednesday, leading off the 800 free relay in 1:29.13.
In the individual event prelims, Hobson started fast and got to the wall in 1:29.75 to take the top seed into finals.
Cal junior Jack Alexy led a close croup of 1:30s with a 1:30.38 to take the second seed.
Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks was third in 1:30.41, followed by Alabama junior Charlie Hawke (1:30.81), Notre Dame junior Chris Guiliano (1:30.86) and Indiana junior Rafael Miroslaw (1:30.99).
Cal junior Gabriel Jett grabbed the seventh seed at 1:31.28 and Louisville junior Murilo Sartori took the final spot with a 1:31.42.

NCAA Men’s 100 Breaststroke
Cal fifth-year Liam Bell took the top seed in the 100 breaststroke in 50.52, breaking the pool record of 50.68 set by Will Licon in 2017.
Stanford junior Ron Polonsky was just behind at 50.87, followed by Towson senior Brian Benzing (50.92), Florida junior Julian Smith (50.94) and Virginia senior Noah Nichols (50.97) as five swimmers broke 51 seconds.
Virginia Tech senior Carles Coll Marti took the sixth seed (51.19), followed by Louisville fifth-year Denis Petrashov (51.25) and Indiana junior Josh Matheny (51.27).

NCAA Men’s 100 Backstroke
After winning the 200 IM, Cal’s Destin Lasco turned the page to the 100 backstroke and thrived.
The senior took the top seed in the 100 backstroke with a swim of 44.00 and could be in striking distance of Luca Urlando‘s NCAA record of 43.35.
NC State fifth-year Kacper Stokowski was just behind, taking the second seed in 44.08.
Georgia sophomore Ruard Van Renen took the third seed in 44.21, followed by a close group that included Florida senior Adam Chaney (44.24), Arizona State sophomores Owen McDonald (44.25) and Hubert Kos (44.29), Indiana fifth-year Brendan Burns (44.51) and Florida freshman Jonny Marshall (44.52).
