NCAA Division III Men’s Champs: Day 2 Prelims

OXFORD, Ohio, March 21. DAY two of coverage at the Men's Division III Swimming and Diving Championships continues with a quick field in the morning swims.

Kenyon leads the way again going into the evening sending 12 men back. Denison, which boasts the top two seeds in the 200 freestyle, is sending back seven.

200 medley relay

The Lords are the top qualifier in the 200 medley relay, as the Kenyon contingent blasted out a 1:30.79 time. Johns Hopkins won the final heat of preliminaries and earned the second berth with a 1:31.57 time while Williams, which swam next to Johns Hopkins in the final heat of the event, swam the third-fastest time of 1:32.05.

400 IM

Ted Marschall from Carleton is the top qualifier in the 400 IM with a 3:56.17 preliminary swim, which is faster than Kenyon's Eric Dunn swam last year to win the event in finals. Keith Diggs from Emory touched right behind Marschall, taking up the second qualifying spot with a 3:56.95. Alex Beyer of Washington (Mo.) comes back seeded third (3:58.25)

100 butterfly

Matthew Harris from Kenyon leads the pack in the 100 butterfly after a 48.56 preliminary performance. Lowell Byers of Denison looks to challenge Harris tonight, as Byers is seeded second with a 48.84. Norman Scott from Williams has the third-place spot going into finals after a 49.02 outing.

200 freestyle

The Denison men have the top two seeds going into finals, as Peter Geissinger and David Curtis share the top time of 1:38.92. Randall Scarborough of Emory is placed in the third slot for tonight after a 1:39.66 swim.

100 breaststroke

Two men will challenge Hope's Josh Boss' 1999 record in the 100 breaststroke tonight, as there were two swims under the 55-second mark. Nelson Westby of St. Olaf returns tonight as the top qualifier with a 54.91 time. Pavel Buyanov from Staten Island clocked a 28.80 in his second 50 en route to a second-place finish in the preliminary heats while David Lazarus of Kenyon will represent the Lords as the third-seeded swimmer in the event (55.79).

100 backstroke

Joshua Mitchell from Kenyon leads the way in the 100 backstroke after a 49.75 performance this morning. John Thomas from second-place Johns Hopkins will look to earn first-place points for the Blue Jays as the second seed in the event (49.87) while Todd Johnson of Hamilton grabbed the third-place seed with a 50.70.

The 800 freestyle relay is a timed final event and will be swum this evening.
