NCAA Division I Women’s Champs: Arizona’s Lacey Nymeyer Blazes to 100 Free Victory

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 22. THE 100 free at the NCAA Division I Championships initially seemed somewhat empty without the presence of Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce for the first time in four years as the Bulldog tied Jenny Thompson last year with her fourth-straight triumph in the event.

Arizona's Lacey Nymeyer, however, filled part of that void to give the Wildcats their sixth title of the meet thus far, and their first 100 freestyle triumph ever. She had to touch out Texas A&M's Julia Wilkinson, 47.50 to 47.56, to do it.

The .06 second margin is the closest in NCAA championship history as Amy Caulkins of Florida (49.37) held the previous record with a .08 second triumph over teammate Kathy Treible (49.45) during the first year of the NCAA Championships in 1982.

Nymeyer's swim also tied for 13th all time as Joyce and Nymeyer both have a 47.50 to their credit from 2005 and 2007, respectively.

Wilkinson's 47.56 moved her into sixth all time behind Emily Silver's 47.45, while Tennessee's Christine Magnuson nearly topped her lifetime best of 48.08 set at the SEC Championships last month with a third-place 48.15.

Not only did Joyce's reign end, Georgia's reign in the event ended at six years as Maritza Correia won in 2002-03.

Arizona pushed its lead to 122 points with 423 points, while Auburn remained second with 301 points. Texas A&M (267), Florida (252.5) and California (237) owned the top five after the event.
