NCAA Division I Women’s Champs: Arizona Claims Second American, NCAA Relay Record With Lightning Fast 400 Medley Relay; Arizona Leads After Day One

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 20. THE Arizona Wildcats closed the night just like they began it at the NCAA Division I Championships – with an American and NCAA relay record.

The foursome of Hailey Degolia, Annie Chandler, Ana Agy and Lacey Nymeyer knocked more than a second from the previous standard with an astonishing 3:29.06.

That performance wiped out California's 3:30.18 set by Lauren Rogers, Jessica Hardy, Dana Vollmer and Emily Silver at last year's NCAAs.

The win gave Arizona its second triumph in the event after the squad of Jenna Gresdal, Erin Sieper, Whitney Myers and Lacey Nymeyer won in 2006 with a 3:31.70.

Auburn's contingent of Margo McCawley, Kara Denby, Ava Ohlgren and Emily Kukors finished second in 3:32.84, while Stanford's Julia Smit, Caroline Bruce, Elaine Breeden and Brooke Bishop finished third in 3:33.77.

In the 100 back leadoff battle, Florida's Gemma Spofforth (51.57) and Indiana's Kate Zubkova (51.68) met for the first time this year head-to-head after becoming the second and third-fastest in the event during the conference championship meet. Spofforth wound up winning that battle 51.63 to 51.72, while Degolia snuck into second with the 51.67.

Degolia also moved into third all time with the 51.67, bettering her previous best of 52.53 that had her 13th overall. Spofforth's initial 51.57 kept her as the second-best, while Zubkova moved back to fourth all time with her 51.68.

At the completion of the evening, Arizona held a 19-point lead with 151 points over defending champion Auburn's 132. California moved into third with 89 points, while Texas A&M held fourth with 88 points. Stanford completed the top five with 80 points.
