FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 24. CALIFORNIA kept piling on the points as the Golden Bears went 1-2 in the men's 200-yard fly at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships. Will Hamilton earned the NCAA title with a 1:40.94. The Golden Bears also clinched the team title with the effort.

Hamilton's time made him the sixth-fastest ever in the event, while Tom Shields' 1:41.07 earned California second-place points. Hamilton pushed California's wins in the event in NCAA history to seven, behind only Michigan (13) and Stanford (12). Other Golden Bear winners were Par Arvidsson (1979, 80), Ugur Taner (1994-96) and Patrick O'Neill (2007). The .13-second victory was close, but the NCAA record is .03 by Texas' Rainer Kendrick (1:54.97) over Stanford's Jayme Cramer (1:55.00) in 2004.

Florida's Marcin Cieslak (1:41.36) moved up to 10th all time in the event's history, while Stanford's Bobby Bollier placed fourth in 1:42.45. Michigan's Dan Madwed (1:42.61), Alabama's Alex Coci (1:43.36), Texas' Neil Caskey (1:44.75) and Stanford's David Mosko (1:44.75) also competed in the finale.

Michigan's John Wojciechowski topped the B final in 1:43.73, while North Carolina's Tom Luchsinger took second in 1:43.84. Florida's Cameron Martin (1:44.11), Minnesota's Kyler Van Swol (1:44.42), Brown's Tommy Glenn (1:44.60), Indiana's Steve Schmuhl (1:45.06), California's Robert Sullivan (1:45.09) and Virginia Tech's Greg Mahon (1:45.90) also picked up points in the consolation heat.

California secured the team title in the event with 502.5 points. Texas, 82.5 points back, can only make up 77 points the rest of the way with 420 points, even if both their divers go 1-2 on the platform and Texas wins the 400 free relay with a California disqualification. Stanford (391.5), Arizona (350) and Michigan (253) remained in the top five.

With the win, California joins just three other schools to have won both the men's and women's NCAA Division I team titles in back-to-back years. Stanford owns the record with wins in 1992, 93 and 94 from both squads, coached by Skip Kenney and Richard Quick. Texas also did it in 1990 and 1991, while Auburn did it twice from 2003-04 and 2006-07.
