The college conference season for swimming and diving got underway last weekend, with no fewer than 10 conferences holding either women’s or combined men’s/women’s championships.
Texas senior Colleen Lann� was named “Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet” at the Big 12 Conference Championships, held Feb. 15-17 in Austin, Texas. Lann� set three individual conference records during the meet, all in sprint freestyle events: the 50 free (22.00), the 200 free (1:44.93) and the 100 free (47.88). All three times lead the nation. The Longhorns posted a Big 12 meet record in scoring 930.5 points for first, followed by Nebraska (532) and Texas A&M (510.5). Three other Texas competitors received awards at the conclusion of the meet. Rachel Harris was voted “Outstanding Newcomer of the Meet,” while Kristen Marquis and Troy Dumais were selected women’s and men’s “Diver of the Meet,” respectively.
The University of North Carolina took home its second straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship title this past weekend. The meet, held at the Virginia Aquatic and Fitness Center, saw the Tar Heels tally 823 points to Virginia’s 639.5 and third-place Clemson’s 523.5. Virginia sophomore Cara Lane was named “Most Valuable Swimmer of the Meet” for the second straight year. She took home first-place awards in the 500 free (4:43.55, fourth on the Top 25 list), 1650 free (ACC record 15:58.46, first) and 200 fly (1:59.03, tenth).
Michigan came from behind on the final day of the meet to overtake Penn State at the Big 10 Women’s Championships. Michigan wound up the competition with 582 points to Penn State’s 557; the host Indiana squad came in third with 460.5. Two-time defending champion Minnesota finished in sixth place. Indiana senior Jenn Cristy was named “Swimmer of the Championship.” The sprinter led off Indiana’s first-place 200 free relay, won the 50 free (22.32, second in the nation) and 100 free (49.14, fourth) and contributed legs on two other Hoosier relays.
Villanova’s Maddy Crippen and Pittsburgh’s Mike Grube were selected “Most Outstanding Swimmer” at the conclusion of the Big East Championships. Crippen was first in the 400 IM (4:11.60, first in the country), 500 free (4:46.71, ninth) and 200 breast (2:14.33, 14th). Grube was first in the 50 free (19.87p, sixth) and 100 free (43.94, eighth) as well as third in the 200 free (1:38.97). Pittsburgh’s men’s team were tops with 647 points to St. John’s 428 and Virginia Tech’s 417. On the women’s side, Notre Dame scored 672.5 points to Virginia Tech’s 482 and Rutgers’ 450.5.
The next two weeks should be equally as exciting. On tap next week will be championships for (among others) the Southeast Conference, Pac 10 women, ECAC Championships, men’s Big 10, Ivy League Championships and the men’s ACC Championships. The following week features men’s competition in the EISL, Pac 10 and Mid-American conferences.
