NCAA Div. I Women: Florida State Lady Seminoles Upset No. 21 Alabama, 164-136

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s swimming and diving team picked up its most important win of the season Friday afternoon when the Lady Seminoles defeated nationally ranked No. 21 Alabama, 164-136, in Tallahassee, Fla. at the Bobby E. Leach Aquatic Center. Leading the way for the Lady Seminoles was senior co-captain Christy Cech, a 2001 All-America honoree, who won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, swam the anchor-leg in the winning 200-yard medley relay and the second-leg of the top finishing 200 free relay. FSU, which received five votes in the latest national poll, picked up its 10th win of the season and is now 6-7 all-time against Alabama.

The Lady Seminoles started the meet off strong with first and third-place finishes in the 200-medley relay. The relay team of Emily Breen, Emma Dutton, Candice Nethercott and Cech touched the wall first in 1:44.36. FSU then jumped out to a 29-7 lead after placing first, second, third and fourth in the 1000-yard free. Jennifer Smith placed first with a time of 10:20.29 and was followed by Angie Leach (10:22.06), Lisa Kirsch (10:26.55) and Golda Marcus (10:35.59) to round out the top four, respectively.

Alabama picked up the pace and won the next four events, however the Tide was unable to gain any ground on the Tribe. FSU was able to hold off ‘Bama by placing second and third in the 200 free and 100 breaststroke, finishing second in the 100 backstroke and taking second, third, fourth and fifth in the 200 butterfly.

Cech then entered the pool to take command in the freestyle sprints. In the 50 free, Cech out-sprinted the competition with a time of 23.65. Finishing second in the 50 free was Jennie Lyes (24.13) who was only two-hundredths of a second out of second place. Cech then increased FSU’s lead to 96-73 with her second individual victory of the day in 100 free at 51.62. Liz Parkinson (53.19) and Lyes (53.26) finished third and fourth, respectively.

The Crimson Tide once again turned in a winning streak of five-straight events, but just like earlier in the meet, the Lady Seminoles kept the lead with their strong depth. FSU finished second through fifth in the 200 back and 500 free, second and third in the 200 breast, and second, fourth and fifth in the 100 fly.

The Tribe’s diving squad turned in yet another impressive performance, earning valuable team points to keep the lead. On the one-meter, Chelsie Lerew placed second with a score of 283.13. Following Lerew in third and fourth place was Tiffany Manning (272.40) and Courtney McClow (259.20). Lerew then placed first on the three-meter with a score of 287.10, with McClow (282.15) and Manning (276.89) turning in third and fourth-place performances.

FSU then placed second through fifth in the 400-yard individual medley before sealing the victory in the 200 free relay. The relay squad of Lyes, Cech, Dutton and Parkinson touched the wall first with a time of 1:34.75 to ensure the Lady Seminole’s biggest victory of the season.

FSU will return to action on February 2, when the Lady Seminoles travel to Baton Rouge, La. to take on LSU, Louisiana-Monroe and Rice in a quad meet. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
