NCAA Div. I Women: Brown Leads After First Day of Ivy League Swim Champs

By Bill Bell

PRINCETON, N.J., Feb. 22. THE BROWN UNIVERSITY Bears got off to a fast start in the first day of the Ivy League Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, which are being held at Princeton University. The Bears totaled 246 points, 21 better than second-place Princeton (225) and 30 points better than third-place Yale (216).

The meet began 45 minutes late because of the cold, snowy weather outside DeNunzio Pool, but the Bears wasted no time in heating things up in the evening's first event. The 200-yard freestyle relay foursome of Dawn Chuck, Emily McCoy, Judy Koonstra and Liz Daniels broke a nine-year-old record by swimming the distance in 1 minute, 32.72 seconds. The previous record of 1:33.38 was set by Yale in 1992.

Brown freshman Jean Lee then won the 500-yard free-style in a time of 4:49.39, edging out Princeton's Valeria Kukla by one-tenth of a second. The Bears went 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley, another freshman, Lindsay Hoban, won the event in 2:03.31 followed by junior Judy Koonstra in 2:04.74.

The first non-Brown swimming victory of the night went to Yale's Meredith Bryarly, who won in 23.20. Earlier in the day during the trials, Bryarly established a new DeNunzio record in the event, covering the 50 yards in 22.82. It was not a meet record, however.

The 1-meter diving competition went to Yale's Bates Gregory, who totaled 281.05 points and earned the Elis 20 team points. The final event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay, went to the Princeton quartet of Kate Conroy, Chrissy Holland, Molly Seto and Kukla. The team's winning time, 3:44.73, was a new meet record by three seconds.

The competition resumes Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. with prelims; the finals are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
