NCAA Div. I Women: Auburn The Surprise Leader After Day One As Three More American Records Fall

EAST MEADOW, N.Y., March 15. SIX teams are very much in the hunt for a national title after the first day of competition at the Women's Division I NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, being held at the Nassau Aquatic Center on Long Island, New York.

The surprise leader after Day One is Auburn University with 121.5 points. Georgia, the two-time defending champion, is a close second with 112.5, with Texas right behind at 107.5. Stanford, making maximum use of limited resources, is fourth with 96.5, followed by #1-ranked Arizona (87) and Cal (85). USC is a strong seventh with 75, while Florida, which led through much of Day One slipped to eighth, with 71.

Dave Marsh, who has guided his Auburn Tigers to two men's NCAA titles was delighted with his team's performance, but guarded about the next two days. "This is the best day we've had in the history of women's swimming at Auburn," he said. "We've never won a women's championship at the conference or national level. But, on paper, today was our best day of the meet. If we want to stay in the hunt, we'll have to find ways of squeezing two or three little extra points out of each event the next two days."

"At the SECs we were also first after the first day, and then Georgia zoomed right by us."

Georgia figures to have its best day tomorrow, while Stanford hopes to build each day, peaking on the final day.

Stanford only qualified seven swimmers and three divers, but they utilized their athletes to the fullest today, bagging a first and second place in individual events, first in the one relay they contested, while the Cardinal divers placed fifth and eleventh on the one-meter springboard.

There was some very fast swimming by athletes from around the nation,as four NCAA and American records were washed away.

200 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY
Texas got things going in the very first event, the 200 yard free relay, taking the lead on the first stroke and pulling away to win in an NCAA and American record of 1:28.89. The team of Colleen Lanne (22.09) Tanica Jamison (22.32), Kelley Robbins (22.36) and Erin Phenix (22.12) scraped one-hundredth of a second off the 12 year-old mark set by another Texas team.

Cal was second in 1:30.05, followed by Auburn in 1:30.31.

Lanne had the fastest leadoff split, 22.09, with Indiana's Jennifer Cristy second fastest at 22.57. Cal's Haley Cope anchored the Golden Bears in 21.84, the fastest split of the event.

500 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY
Hometown Jessica Foschi delighted the partisan crowd with a stirring, come-from-behind victory to take the 500 free in 4:37.81. The time makes her the fifth fastest swimmr ever in the event.

Swimming in her home pool, the Stanford junior took it to the field right at the start, splitting 53.69 at the 100 and 1:49.53 at the 200. Virginia's Cara Lane was second at the 200 in 1:50.70, while top-qualifier Jannelle Atkinson, of Florida, was third in 1:50.99.

Atkinson passed Lane in the third hundred, but picked up only 14-hundredths on the high-flying Foschi. Then the Florida freshman, an Olympian from Jamaica, made her move, turning at the 400 yard mark in 3:42.60 to a seemingly fading Foschi's 3:42.85.

That's when Foschi kicked her race–literally–into high gear. Spurred on by a screaming crowd, yelling teammates, and coach Richard Quick, who was jumping so high he looked as if he could shatter the world high jump record, Foschi blazed the final 100 in 54.96, almost two full seconds faster than Atkinson(4:39.44), who barely held off Lane's challenge for second. Lane finished in 4:39.61.

A breathless Quick could only comment at first: "What a great swim!" Then he found his voice: "Jessica always has a great final 100. Anyone who's with her with 100 to go had better know she's got an awesome kick."

Quick's comments were echoed by those of her club coach, Dave Ferris: "I hoped she could win. I knew she'd be there in the hunt. But at the 400, I thought the race was hers. She hadn't used her feet the first 400, and she's had a great last 100 all her life."

Commenting on the implications of Foschi's win, Ferris said: "It's wonderful for a kid from the east to come back to her hometown and win. It's great for her, great for her club, and great for swimming in the east."

200 YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
As exciting as the 500 free was, the next event–the 200 IM–matched it. In prelims, Stanford's Shelly Ripple clocked 1:56.56, making her the second fastest American–and third fastest swimmer–in the event behind Summer Sanders and Martina Moravcova.

But right behind her was Auburn sophomore Maggie Bowen at 1:57.04. The two were sure to battle to the wire in the final, and that's just what they did.

Ripple jumped out to a big lead on the fly, splitting 25.06, with only Georgia's Keegan Walkley (25.31) and USC's Michala Kwasny (25.45) within hailing distance. Bowen (26.34) was sixth.

Walkley narrowed the lead to 19-hundredths after the backstroke, but Ripple turned at the halfway mark in 54.27–ahead of Sander's record pace. Bowen moved up to fourth, but turned way back in 55.84.

That's when she turned on the jets. While Ripple split a more-than-respectable 34.00 for her troke leg, Bowen posted a 32.34. With 50 yards to go, it was Bowen, 1:28.18, to Ripple's 1:28.27.

Ripple stayed with Bowen for the first 25 yards of freestyle, but then the Tiger roared, and Bowen pulled away, touching in 1:55.49 to break Sanders' nine year-old American record of 1:55.54.

Ripple bettered her prelim time, with her 1:56.24 making her the third fastest American in history. Kwsny equaled Bowen's final 50 split of 27.31 to touch home in a lifetime best 1:57.60.

The fourth fastest time of the event was turned in by Arizona's Amanda Beard, who won consols in 1:58.27.

After the race, Bowen told SWIMMING WORLD and SWIMINFO: "Yes, I was going for Summer's record. She's always been an icon for me, and her records untouchable. It's an honor to break her record.

Bowen said "I could tell I was going to win when we flipped with one lap to go."

Bowen's coach, Dave Marsh, was full of praise for his speedy sophomore: "I knew she had a shot at breaking the American record, and the race played out perfectly. She and Shelly have been competing against each other–in Mississippi and Louisiana–since they were eight years old. Shelly's fast first 100 got Maggie out faster than she would otherwise have gone. She held back in the fly and let Shelley take the lead–that shows a lot of confidence and maturity."

50 YARD FREESTYLE
For the first time in her NCAA career, Texas' Colleen Lanne was nervous before a race. But the jitters must have been good for the Longhorn senior, who took the lead at the start of the 50-yard sprint and gradually extended it.

Lanne touched in 21.99 to win her first individual NCAA crown. The time makes her the fourth American woman to 22 seconds. Cal's Haley Cope was second in 22.34 while Indiana's Jennifer Cristy was third, touching in 22.47. The top three finishers are all seniors.

ONE METER SPRINGBOARD DIVING
Representing the University of Houston, Russia's Yulia Pakhalina, won the one meter diving event with 329.60 points, edging Miami's Katie Beth Bryant by less than five points.

Pakhalina, who combined with Vera Ilyina to win gold in the synchronized diving at the Sydney Olympics, led all the way, but never opened up a comfortable lead over Bryant or any of the other top seven finishers, who included U.S. Olympian Jenny Keim.

Diving legend Cynthia Potter told SWIMMING WORLD and SWIMINFO: "Yulia is a beautiful diver. If anyone is going to beat her here it'll be because she breaks her leg."

400 YARD MEDLEY RELAY
In the prelims, Cal's Natalie Coughlin had blazed to an American record 51.66 for the 100 back leading off the Bears' medley relay. But Cal still qualified second, six-tenths of a second behind Stanford.

So Cal coach Teri McKeever switched her super-frosh to the butterfly to go head-to-head with Stanford's Misty Hyman. In Coughlin's place leading off was Haley Cope, American record holder in the 50 meter dorsal event.

At first, the tactic seemed to work, as Cope posted a 53.32 backstroke leg to Shelly Ripple's 53.35. No other backstroker went under 54, though Arizona's Beth Botsford (54.04), Indiana's Susan Woessner (54.11) and Auburn's Taylor Spivey (54.13) came close.

Cal's lead was short-lived. Though Stacianna Stitts notched a 1:00.51 troke leg, the Cardinal's Tara Kirk scorched a 58.77. Three other trokers split under one minute: Penn State's Kristen Woodring (59.48), Auburn's Maggie Bowen (59.74) and Arizona's Amanda Beard (59.80).

The came the showdown between Hyman and Coughlin. Coughlin split a brilliant 51.09, but she still lost ground to the Olympic champion. Though Hyman looked tighter than in the morning when she recorded a 50.72 split, she still managed a 50.80–to give her the two fastest 100 yard butterfly splits in history.

The rest of the flyers were far behind the leaders, as only Shona Kitson of Texas (52.94) could 53 seconds.

Stanford's Siobhan Cropper delivered the coup de grace with a 49.51 final split, as Stanford touched in 3:32.43 for a new NCAA and U.S. Open record. The time is not an American record as Cropper is from Trinidad.

Cal, anchored by Danielle Becks (49.91), finished in 3:34.83, breaking the American record of 3:35.37 set by Georgia in 1998. Arizona, buoyed by Sarah Tolar's brilliant 47.93 anchor, also bettered the old American mark with a 3:35.21. Three other swimmers bettered 49 seconds for the freestyle leg: Erin Phenix (Texas), 48.31, Maritza Correia (Georgia), 48.32, and Sarah Platzer (UCLA), 48.97.
