NCAA Div. I: After Day 4 at SECs, Georgia Leads the Women, Auburn Tops the Men

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Feb. 23. WHEN he was UCLA's men's hoops coach a few moons ago, current Georgia head man Jim Herrick characterized a particularly important upcoming game as follows: "It's gonna be another ball burner."

That same phrase could well be applied to the women's team race at this year's Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championmships as the meet heads into Saturday's final session.

Quintuple-defending champ Georgia is clinging to a 11.5-point advantage over Florida (494-482.5) while Auburn is well within striking distance in third (475).

On the men's side Auburn, also quintuple-defending champ (and winners of seven of the last eight titles), is more comfortably ahead over Florida, 560-507 with Georgia third (257).

Women's Events
Close finishes are nothing new for Coach Jack Bauerle's Lady Bulldogs, who are triple-defending NCAA Division 1 champs. To win the whole enchilada last season [NCAAs] the meet came down to the final leg of the final race, the 400 free relay, where Georgia had to finish ahead of Stanford by at least two places — otherwise the Cardinal would win by a half-point.

In the end, "Ritzi" (Maritza Correia] anchored the
Dawgs in 47.75 — fastest split of the meet — and Georgia edged Stanford by a point and-a-half to win the closest finish in history.

The Dawgs are in a good position to win this evening, having a poolful of qualifiers in the various events. But the Gators have depth too and Auburn can't be counted out either.

On the men's side Auburn is in a good position to make it six-straight championships but Florida's Gators — who with 33 crowns are by far and away the leading swim power in the conference — could well make a run at the Tigers.

* * * * *

In Friday evening's women's events, Auburn got things off to a flying start with a solid 3:36.02 400 medley relay win and an automatic NCAA cut. Zimbabwe froshwoman Kristy Coventry, an Olympian, led off for the Tigers in 54.54, her pr and second-quickest behind Georgia's Christine Keller's 54.51.

Then American-NCAA 200 IM record-holder Maggie Bowen took over and split an eye-popping 59.64 for the breast leg and the race was history. Bowen won the 200 medley the previous evening in an SEC record 1:56.51, No. 1 nationally and seventh-quickest performance all-time. Her old conference record was 1:57.26 from last year's meet.

The first individual event wss the 400 IM and again it was Bowen's time to shine, winning in a pool-record and — need it be added? — NCAA auto cut 4:08.40 plus a No. 1 national ranking.

At last year's SECs Bowen won in 4:08.27, just off Florida's Tracy Caulkins' meet-standard 4:07.75 from the 1984 championships at her home pool in Gainesville.

Bowen won NCAAs last year in a pr and Auburn-record 4:07.26, 10th and seventh on the all-time performances-performers list, and just a couple of tenths off the SEC record of 4:07.06 by Georgia's Keegan Walkley from the '99 NCAAs at Athens. Ironically, Walkley lost that race to Villanova's Maddy Crippen, who went a pr and Big East-record 4:06.76.

Walkley won't be available for the Dawgs next month at Austin (site of the NCAA Championships) but Crippen is a junior at Villanova and anxious to get back to the victory podium.

Both Florida and Georgia scor3ed big in this race, with the Gators getting second, fourth and fifth, the 'Dawgs taking third, sixth and seventh.

Auburn scored an eighth by senior Cassiday Maxwell, who went 4:23.44 but did a pr 4:20.35 in the prelims (NCAA "B").

Georgia then went one-two in the 200 free, with senior Stefanie Williams racing to a pr and school-record 1:44.94, second nationally behind Cal's Natalie Coughlin's 1:43.77 from the Longhorn Invitational last Decvmber in Austin.

(It's unlikely Coughlin will swim this race at NCAAs as she's defending 100 back-fly champ and both fall on Day 2, same as the 200 free. But if she does happen to go the 200 rather than the fly and/or the back,
wellllllllllll…)

In any event, Williams' time moves her into eighth on the all-time performers' list. Teammate Correia was second in 1:45.55. This latter time is just off her pr 1:45.48 that won the SEC title two years ago at Auburn. Williams and Correira rank second and fourth nationally with only Coughlin and Texas' Lauren Thies (1:45.38) having swum faster.

Auburn next got 20 points from soph Demarae Christianson when she won the 100 fly in an SEC-record/pr 53.20 (NCAA auto). Louisiana State senior Mandy Leach (53.84), a Zimbabwean Olympian too, was runner-up.

Florida scored a third (South African Olympian Renate DuPlessis' 53.97), fourth and sixth while Auburn took an eighth.

In the 100 breast it was all Alabama's Anne Poleska, the defending 200 champ, who won in a pool-record and NCAA auto cut of 1:00.99. Second was Georgia's Ashley Roby (1:01.33) who has a pr of 59.91, sixth on the all-time performers' list — and third-quickest among returning collegians.

Poleska, a German Olympian, has a pr of 1:00.85 from last year's NCAAs and teammate Marcy Warriner joined her on the victory podium with her pr 1:01.50 — good for the bronze. Dawg frosh Lindsay Ertter swam a pr 1:01.72 for fifth.

In the final women's individual race, Auburn's Coventry shwoed that 54.54 relay leadoff was no fluke as she won in 53.82, a pr, pool and Auburn school
record. The old mark was 53.97 by Katie Ryan from the '00 SECs.

Auburn had four women score in that race, taking first, a tie for third (frosh Margaret Hoelzer's 55.14 after a pr 55.05 in the heats), Jenni Anderson's sixth and Taylor Spivey's eighth.

Georgia also had a pair of finalists as did Florida.

Men's Events
As was the case in the women's events tonight, Auburn got off to a fast start in the men's race via a 3:09.99 400 medley relay victory, fastest nationally for '01-'02 and just .29 off their meet record of 3:09.70 from alst season.

Kirk Hampleman led off in 48.09, then breaststroker Pat Calhoun split a quick 52.86, fatest of the meet. Flyer Andy Haidinyak followed suit with a 46.50 effort (again No. 1) and anchor Ryan Wochomurka, a mere freshman from Indiana, came home in 42.54.

"Wocho" was third in the 50 free last night (pr 19.80) and he's a name to keep an eye out for in the next few yeras. He's not an Anthony Ervin yet but under the guidance of his coach, Tiger head man David Marsh, the
Hoosier youngster has made great strides so far this season and as the song says, "The Best is Yet to Come."

Auburn's Kevin Clements, 500 free champ for the second-consecutive season last night, took the 400 IM tonight for his second individual gold. His time (pool-record 3:44.26) ranks him No. 1 nationally and is not far off his pr and school-record 3:42.90 from last year's NCAAs, where he was third.

Clements' NCAA time is also No. 2 all-time on the SEC list, trailing only Florida' Greg Burgess' record 3:40.64 that won in '94 and is history's second-quickest swim.

The two swimmers who finished ahead of Clements at alst season's NCAAs (Michigan's Tim Siciliano, USC's Erik Vendt) are both back this year too so next month's race at Athens (site of the men's NCAA DI Championships) should — to quote Coach Herrick — be "a real ball burner."

Siciliano will be going for his record fourth-straight title while Vendt has been silver medalist at the Y2K Olympics and last year's World Championships.

Runner-up was Florida' Eric Donnelly (pr 3:44.97) and he was also second last year. Donnelly's old pr was 3:45.00 that won him the '00 title.

South Carolina's Szolt Gaspar, a Hungarian native and Olympian, won the 100 fly in a pool-record 46.60, just off his pr 46.58 that he won with as a freshman two eyras ago at Auburn. The meet record is 46.40 by the Tiger's John Hargis from 1997. Gaspar's time is also No. 1 nationally as defending NCAA champ Ian Crocker of Texas went a 46.70 at the Big 12 meet last evening.

Seven of the eight finalists clocked sub 48.0 to make it a very fast field.

The 200 free saw unheralded Gator feshman Adam Sioui win in a pr and pool-record 1:34.91, No. 1 nationally. Sioui is "unheralded" to all but his
coach, Gator boss Greg Troy, who knew of his potential when he recruited him last season.

Second was anther rookie, Auburn's Clay Kirkland (1:36.80). Kirkland was the nation's top prep 100-200 freestyle last season for Bolles School in Florida, the institution whence Troy both came from and toiled for just a few years ago. Talk about ingratitude!

Wochomurka was fifth (pr 1:37.55).

Calhoun won the 100 breast (53.47) with Georgia soph Kyle Salyards (54.04) second and Auburn soph Mark gangloff (54.27) third. Tennessee's defending champ, senior Jeremy McDonnell, was fifth (54.34) but Vol coach John Trembley believes his star pupil is a contender for NCAA honors.

Florida went one-two in the 100 back, wtih soph Chris Kellam clocking a pr 47.87 and teammate Gabriel Mangabeira — a freshman — touching in a pr 47.90. This latter swimmer is so new to Gatorland he's not even mentioned in the Florida swim media guide, presumably having transfered in last month.

He also was third just a few events earlier with a pr 47.57 in the 100 fly and, like Wochumurka, could be a name to watch out for at Athens.

Normally the 800 free relay would have been the concluding event and the 200 medley relay would have been the opening race. However, since the SECs has
a combined women's and men's meet, the format is slightly changed to extend over a four-day rather than a three-day span. Consequently, these two relays are the only swimming events on day 1.
