NC State, Virginia Each Claim Relay Wins at Women’s ACC Championships; Comerford Splits 1:40.26
During the first day of action in Greensboro, N.C., at the women’s ACC championships, defending conference champion NC State and Virginia each won a relay as the two teams prepare to battle with Louisville for the conference crown throughout the weekend.
The top individual performance of the day came, unsurprisingly, from Louisville junior Mallory Comerford, who recorded one of the fastest 200-yard free relay splits in history.
After one day, UNC led with 151 points, just ahead of Virginia (143). They were followed by Duke (139), Louisville (138), Notre Dame (135), NC State (135), Virginia Tech (133), Florida State (131), Miami (109), Pittsburgh (101), Georgia Tech (87) and Boston College (60).
Read about all events contested below, including women’s and men’s diving action.
4×50 Medley Relay
The North Carolina State Wolfpack kicked off their conference title defense with a win in the 4×50 medley relay. The team of Elise Haan (23.59), Anna Shumate (27.33), Krista Duffield (23.27) and Lexie Lupton (21.88) finished in a time of 1:36.07.
Virginia Tech, seeded sixth headed into the event, surprisingly led after the butterfly leg and ended up finishing second in 1:36.35. Klaudia Nazieblo, Joelle Vereb, Maggie Gruber and Adriana Grabski swam for the Hokies. Virginia’s foursome of Abby Richter, Vivian Tafuto, Anna Pang and Caitlin Cooper took third in 1:36.69. Cooper had the race’s fastest anchor split at 21.23.
North Carolina finished fourth in 1:36.82, followed by top-seeded Louisville in 1:37.09. The Cardinals went with a team of Alina Kendzior, Mariia Astashkina, Grace Oglesby and Casey Fanz, meaning that Mallory Comerford will be available for three individual events and all four remaining relays.
Rounding out the top eight were Notre Dame (1:37.15), Duke (1:37.31) and Notre Dame (1:37.71).

4×200 Free Relay
The Virginia Cavaliers came from behind to win the 4×200 free relay in 6:55.77. After Morgan Hill led off in 1:44.86, none of the other UVA swimmers split 1:44 or slower: Jen Marrkand (1:43.69), Paige Madden (1:43.71) and Eryn Eddy (1:43.51). It was Eddy’s furious finish that helped Virginia overcome a deficit that was almost two seconds heading into the anchor leg.
Louisville, after leading almost the entire race, finished second in 6:56.32. Sophie Cattermole, Mallory Comerford, Rachael Bradford-Feldman and Arina Openysheva swam for the Cardinals, with Comerford blasting an amazing 1:40.26 split to give Louisville the lead.
NC State’s quartet of Lexie Lupton, Elise Haan, Hannah Moore and Julia Poole touched well back in third, with a time of 7:03.63. Notre Dame (7:04.31), Virginia Tech (7:07.49), North Carolina (7:07.93), Georgia Tech (7:09.06) and Pittsburgh (7:09.09) also finished in the top eight.
