NC State Sweeps Medley Relays With Near NCAA Record in 200 Medley to Close Out Historic Night For Program
The NC State Wolfpack capped a historic night to close out the Friday night finals of the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships in Greensboro with its third win as a program, finishing with a 200 medley relay win of 1:33.18. The team of Katharine Berkoff (23.27), Sophie Hansson (25.92), Sirena Rowe (22.73) and Kylee Alons (21.26) swept the medley relays as NC State won its second national title relay in school history after last night’s 400 medley relay that broke the NCAA record.
This is also the third win of the night as Berkoff and Hansson each won their respective individual events tonight in the 100 back and breaststroke as the Wolfpack are solidly in second place with one more day to go. The school has never been higher than seventh place at NCAAs as the Atlantic Coast Conference is becoming a powerhouse conference.
Virginia will hang on to the NCAA & American Record but will not have the satisfaction of finishing the season as national champs as they finished second for the third time this meet with the team of Caroline Gmelich (24.13), Alexis Wenger (26.41), Lexi Cuomo (22.40) and Kate Douglass (21.19) at 1:34.13. They were well off their 1:32.93 American record they set weeks prior at ACCs in this same pool in Greensboro as this relay being on Friday night of NCAAs versus being on the first night of conference can certainly cause some disparity between the season best times.
Ohio State finished in third overall at 1:34.96 with the team of Emily Crane (23.92), Hannah Bach (26.58), Katherine Zenick (22.95) and Taylor Petrak (21.51) as they sit fifth overall.
Cal was fourth and sit in that same spot in the team standings as the team of Isabelle Stadden (23.91), Ema Rajic (26.80), Isabel Ivey (22.76) and Elise Garcia (21.51) swam a 1:34.98 out of the penultimate heat.
Stanford (1:35.62), Alabama (1:35.80), Texas (1:35.84), Tennessee (1:36.25) and North Carolina (1:36.25) rounded out the top eight.
The quickest spits outside the top four came from Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil (23.17), Tennessee’s Mona McSharry (26.57), Missouri’s Sarah Thompson (22.43) and Alabama’s Kalia Antoniou (21.46).
This is the first time an ACC school has won the 200 medley relay and the first time a school outside the Pac-12 or SEC has won it since Texas in 1987.
