Navy, George Mason vs. Loyola (MD)

BALTIMORE, Maryland, October 8. THE Navy swimming and diving programs combined to win 26 events as the women's team defeated Loyola (208-89) and the men's squad topped both Loyola (157-126) and George Mason (162-124) Saturday at Mangione Pool in Baltimore, Md.

The women's team won all but the meet's final 400 freestyle relay event in defeating the host Greyhounds. Leading the way for the Mids was Laura Gorinski (Jr., Greensburg, Pa.), who won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.97), 200 breaststroke (2:22.85) and 200 individual medley (2:11.23) races. Kellie Darmody (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) also picked up a pair of wins on the day as she claimed both backstroke events (57.75, 2:05.56), as did Alexandra Bilunas (Fr., Omaha, Neb.), who won the two sprint freestyle races (24.63, 53.34). Rounding out the foursome of multiple event winners for the Mids was Courtney Vandament (Sr., Coppell, Texas), who swept the two diving boards (235.20, 245.85).

Additional individual event winners for Navy were Katie Davidson (Jr., Geneva, Fla.), winner of the 1000 freestyle (10:28.70), Amanda Thach (Fr., Seattle, Wash.), who won the 200 free (1:55.82), Rheanna Vaughn (So., Aliso Viejo, Calif.), the 200 butterfly (2:06.09) winner, Ange Sawick (Fr., Abingdon, Pa.), who won the 500 free (5:01.01), and Toni Paruso (Jr., Savannah, Ga.), who claimed the 100 fly (57.29) race.

"It was a good meet for us," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "Loyola presented some great challenges for us, so we feel fortunate to come away with good win. Overall, it was a fantastic performance by the whole group. We are pleased with the way we rose to challenge of our first meet. It was a real good team performance by everyone."

The Navy men's team came away with 11 event victories during the meet, including wins in both relay races. The lone Mid to win a pair of individual events on the day was Luke Hoffer (So., Chapel Hill, N.C.), who won both breaststroke races (57.93, 2:04.72). Also for the Mids, Mac Anthony (Sr., Allentown, Pa.) would win the 200 freestyle (1:40.67) race, with Joseph Stark (Jr., Erie, Pa.) winning the 100 backstroke (52.44), Mark Meyer (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) winning the 200 fly (1:51.66), Robbie Parker (Jr., Vienna, Va.) claiming the win in the 50 free (21.06), Zach Ingold (So., Hornell, N.Y.) winning the 100 free (46.19), Steve Dukleth (Fr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) placing first in the 100 fly (50.65), Ben Freedman (So., Kennewick, Wash.) winning the three-meter diving board (348.35) and Ben Bondurant (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) earning the victory in the 200 individual medley (1:55.06).

"We received some good early season performances today," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "We are pleased with getting the season underway and finding out where we are at. We are anxious to keep it going with the next few meets ahead of us."

The Navy women's team will race Friday at James Madison, while the men's team will be off from competition until October 21 when both Navy squads race at UMBC.
