National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund Joins Swimming South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, June 3. SA's swim stars will be looking to shine when they compete in three international galas in the Mare Nostrum series in Europe during the next fortnight.

The national swim team spent the past five days at the Wits Sports Science Centre in Johannesburg where they have been put through various testing and medical screening sessions ahead of the international competition.

With the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) having put R24 million into Swimming SA's projects over a three year period, the SA swim team will take to the waters in Barcelona (June 6-7), Canet, France (June 9-11) and Monaco (June 13-14) as part of their preparations for the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy (July 26-August 2).

Swimming SA CEO Shaun Adriaanse said that the NLDTF investment into aquatics is crucial towards the growth of the sport at both elite and developmental levels.

"Swimming SA and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund are working together in a positive frame of mind in the interest of our athletes," said Adriaanse.

"The funding provided by the NLDTF is allocated towards the High Performance national academy Centre of Excellence, the High Performance athletes support, the High Performance training camps, the High Performance international participation programme, transformation and development, Swimming SA's Learn to Swim programme and administration costs."

Swimming SA has also received an additional amount for the hosting of international events, which will be used to fund the staging of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup later this year.

The SA swimming team, under the guidance of national coaching convenor Dean Price will depart for Europe on June 4, with the swimmers entered as follows:
