National Junior College Athletic Association: Indian River State College Sweeps; Wins 38th, 31st Straight Team Titles

FORT PIERCE, Florida, March 10. THE National Junior College Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships this year ended just like the previous three decades have, with the Indian River State College men and women sweeping the team titles.

The Indian River women captured their 31st consecutive team title with 1,724 points in total. Daytona State also broke 1,000 with a second-place tally of 1,195.5. Lincoln (915), Monroe (828) and Darton (690.5) finished third through fifth.

The IRSC men amassed 1,794.5 points to snatch their 38th straight triumph in the team title race. Daytona State finished second with 1,253 points, while Lincoln took third with 904 points. Darton (759) and South Georgia (524)placed fourth and fifth.

IRSC's Hallie Petersohn won the women's 1650 free in 17:09.04, while Lincoln's Maggie Rea finished second in 17:19.54. Monroe's Jennifer Conklin placed third in 17:34.55. Daytona State's Takashi Worrell claimed the men's 1650 free in 15:50.78, while teammates John Curran (16:04.26) and Dominic Walter (16:10.71) gave DSC a top-three sweep.

DSC's Katie Pheil topped the women's 200 back in 2:01.29, while IRSC's Natalie Lenderman (2:03.35) and Kristina Morgan (2:06.99) placed second and third. Alberto Catano conquered the men's 200 back with a 1:48.82, while IRSC's Logan Mosley placed second in 1:51.01. Darton's Deniss Jariga touched third in 1:51.95.

DSC went 1-2 in the women's 100 free with Ashly Isaacson winning in 50.55. Sophie Drake placed second in 50.89, while IRSC's Maria Munoz earned third in 51.40. Bradley Tandy snared the men's 100 free title in 43.12 for IRSC, while teammate Caleb Weir touched second in 44.05. Daytona State's Marco Gonzalez wound up third in 44.80.

IRSC's Tryshia Centeno downed the NJCAA record in the women's 200 breast with a 2:14.48. That swim smoked the NJCAA record of 2:16.53 set by Mary Frank of IRSC in 2010. Lincoln's Paula Carvajal took second in 2:24.15, while Daytona State's Sammy Akoubian finished third in 2:26.27. IRSC's Jared Pike captured the men's 200 breast in 1:59.80, while Darton's TJ Bland (2:02.35) and Lincoln's Max Spencer (2:02.46) completed the podium.

IRSC's Solyvette Lizardi clipped a 1991 NJCAA record in the women's 200 fly with a 2:02.45. That performance erased the 2:02.70 set by Montserrdt Gomariz of Broward in 1991. Sarah D'Antoni of IRSC took second tonight in 2:05.67, while teammate Annie Cohoat gave the River a sweep with a third-place 2:11.13. IRSC's Edwin Angjeli posted a 1:50.05 to win the men's 200 fly. ICCC's Goran Koprivnjak (1:51.73) and Calvin Fusilier (1:51.99) placed second and third in the finale.

IRSC's Natalie Lenderman, Tryshia Centeno, Chandel Domaso and Maria Munoz completed the meet for the women with a 3:24.67 to win the women's 400 free relay. Daytona State (3:25.85) and Lincoln (3:39.63) finished second and third. IRSC's Bradley Tandy, Logan Mosley, Luis Flores and Caleb Weir claimed the men's 400 free relay in 2:54.69. That swim bettered the NJCAA record of 2:55.64 set by IRSC back in 2008. Lincoln (3:02.62) and Daytona State (3:04.37) rounded out the podium. Tandy also downed the NJCAA record in the men's 100 free with a 42.76 leadoff.
