Myles Brown upset South African superstar Chad le Clos in the men’s 200-meter free at the South African National Championships in Durban.

Myles Brown edged Chad le Clos in the men’s 200-meter free, 1:47.44 to 1:47.89, in a strong upset in Durban.  Brown trains with le Clos, who is seen as the top swimmer in Africa and has routinely won nearly every race he’s entered aside from going against breaststroke specialist Cameron van der Burgh.  Brown’s win speaks volumes about where the new South African record holder is at in the world at this point.  Josh Steyn took second in 1:50.19.

Le Clos then finished behind Sebastien Rousseau in men’s 200-meter fly semis with a 1:57.39 with Rousseau earning the top seed in 1:56.40 for 11th in the world rankings.  Daniel Ronaldson grabbed the third seed with a 1:59.56.

Van der Burgh, who already stands third in the world in the men’s 50-meter breast with a 27.17 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup, posted a 27.21 to lead semifinals tonight.  Giulio Zorzi qualified second in 27.59 for 11th in the rankings.  Marko Visser earned the third seed in 28.33.

Mariella Venter topped the women’s 100-meter back in 1:02.03 with Nathania van Niekerk taking second in 1:02.72.  Jessica Ashley-Cooper wound up third in 1:03.09.

Ricky Ellis won the men’s 100-meter back in 55.61 with Neil De Villiers placing second in 55.70. Gerhard Zandberg took third in 55.77.

Tara Nicholas led the women’s 50-meter breast semis in 32.01.  Tatjana Schoenmaker posted a second-seeded 32.43 with Franko Jonker clocking a third-seeded 32.58.

Schoenmaker returned in the women’s 100-meter breast finale with a 1:08.85 for the win.  Nicholas took second in 1:09.04 with Jonker placing third in 1:09.98.

Karin Prinsloo topped the women’s 200-meter free semis in 1:59.32.  Marlies Ross (2:03.38) and Kirsty McLauchlan (2:04.10) made their way to second and third overall in qualifying.
