Mona McSharry Sets Second National Record In As Many Days At Irish Open With 30.29 In 50 Breast

Mona McSharry set her second national record in as many days at the Irish Open Swimming Championships with a 30.29 blast in the 50m breaststroke in Dublin.

McSharry continued the form that saw her lower her 100 breaststroke mark to 1:06.04 on Sunday in the 50m event, slicing 0.27 from her previous mark of 30.56 from the TYR Pro Swim Series in Knoxville in January in what was also a championship record.

It propelled the 22-year-old, who competed at the Tokyo Olympics, second in the rankings behind Lilly King and her 30.04 in Fort Lauderdale last month.

Jack Cassin set an Irish senior and junior record in the 400IM on Sunday and returned to the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre to set a 100 fly junior standard in 54.29 as he collected bronze behind Max McCusker (52.96) and Shane Ryan (53.75).

Grace Davison won the 400IM in 5:08.39 before returning to the pool 20 minutes later for the 100 freewhere she finished fourth behind by Victoria Catterson in 55.70 ahead of Danielle Hill (55.71) and Erin Riordan (56.01).

The 16-year-old’s time of 56.93 was an Irish junior record and lowered Sycerika McMahon’s standard of 57.06 that had stood since the super-suited era of 2009.

Hill upgraded silver to gold in the 50 fly in 26.96 to add to her 50 free title on Saturday, the Larne swimmer the only woman inside 27secs.

Nathan Wiffen set a new championship record as he cruised to victory in the men’s 800 free in 8:03.79, a 10-sec personal best.

Diarmuid Sutton won the men’s 50br in 29.02.
