MIT Men Continue Perfect Record

WALTHAM, Massachusetts, January 14. MIT's men's swimming and diving team used contributions from a number of different members of the squad to maintain its perfect start to the 2006-07 season with a 156-118 victory over Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon. The triumph pushes Tech's record to 4-0 on the season, while Brandeis falls to 4-4 in defeat.

Freshman phenom Rastislav Racz was once again MIT's top performer, contributing to three of the Cardinal and Gray's 11 victories. The Bratislava, Slovakia, native took the individual crowns in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.43) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.47) while contributing as part of the victorious 400-yard medley relay team along with Jeremy Chang, Peter Wellings and an unidentified fourth swimmer (3:40.96).

Senior Craig Edwards also finished in the top spot in multiple races. His 1:00.99 in the 100-yard backstroke and 54.96 in the 100-yard butterfly both provided maximum points to the Engineers' cause.

The Cardinal and Gray went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard backstroke, as Chang (2:07.08) and freshman Chris Carper (2:18.93) followed winner Racz. Tech also took the top two spots in the 1000-yard freestyle (Zack Cordero and Harrison Hall), the 200-yard freestyle (Kalvin Kao and Wellings), the 200-yard breaststroke (Deke Hu and Matt Angle) and the 100-yard backstroke (Racz and Hu).

Freshman Luke Cummings turned in a 22.34 to take maximum points in the 50-yard freestyle, while sophomore Dan Lopez swept the diving events with scores of 242.63 in the one-meter and 255.00 in the three-meter.

The diving portion of the meet was hosted by MIT on Saturday morning, while the swimming competition was hosted by Brandeis later in the afternoon.

MIT will not have much time to celebrate its victory, as the Engineers will return to Cambridge to host New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference foes U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Springfield College on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. Brandeis will host another NEWMAC school, Clark University, on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
