FEDERAL WAY – One of the fastest 200 free battles in the history of the sport occurred between Missy Franklin and Simone Manuel at the Pac 12 Championships.

California’s Celina Li opened up what should be a big night for the Golden Bears with a 4:06.09 to win the women’s 400-yard IM.  That’s less than a second off the NCAA A cut, but should get her into NCAAs.

Teammate Kelly Naze finished second in the finale with a time of 4:08.38, while Stanford’s Tara Halsted took third overall in 4:12.75.

Stanford lost some big points as A finalist Allison Brown was disqualified.

USC’s Kendyl Stewart raced her way to victory in the women’s 100-yard fly with a time of 51.10 as she just clipped California’s Farida Osman (51.14), Osman has been on fire this weekend after an upset against Stanford’s Simone Manuel yesterday in the 50 free, but she couldn’t get the win tonight.

California had a huge 100 fly, however, with Rachel Bootsma (51.79), Noemie Thomas (51.91) and Jasmine Maue (52.40) finishing 3-4-6.

California’s Missy Franklin and Stanford’s Simone Manuel staged a battle for the ages as Franklin touched out Manuel, 1:41.09 to 1:41.15, in the women’s 200-yard free.  Those are the second and third fastest times ever behind Franklin’s NCAA and American record 1:40.31 from last year’s NCAA Championships, and downed Dana Vollmer’s Pac 12 record of 1:41.53 and Franklin’s meet record of 1:42.29.

Meanwhile, USC’s Chelsea Chenault took third in 1:43.17.

Franklin has been a long-standing name at the top of the 200 freestyle event, with a total of five of the top 10 times all time.  Manuel, however, is broadening her repertoire with the 200 free after breaking onto the scene as a sprint specialist.

Stanford’s Sarah Haase clinched the 100-yard breast crown with an NCAA A cut of 58.60, while UCLA’s Allison Wine touched second in 59.75.  Stanford’s Heidi Poppe placed third in 1:00.15.

California’s Rachel Bootsma, who is the third-ranked swimmer all time in the 100-yard back with a 50.13 from 2013, won her third Pac 12 100 back title with a 50.84 tonight.

Stanford’s Ally Howe finished second in 51.72, while California’s Melanie Klaren placed third in 51.90.
