Missouri v. Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Illinois. November 7. MIZZOUO'S No. 20 men's swimming and diving team claimed their second dual victory of the season with a convincing 181.5-110.5 victory over the Salukis of Southern Illinois. The Tigers won both diving events and ten of the first 11 swimming events before taking exhibitions in the last three swims of the meet.

"I'm pretty happy with how the meet turned out," Missouri Head Coach Brian Hoffer said. "I like how we performed on the road. They are a team that could've beaten us if we were off, so I'm very pleased with the guys."

The Tigers jumped out on top in the first event, as the foursome of seniors Jake Hoffmann, Ted Harris, Eric Smith and freshman Jack Dwyer won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:32.92. Seniors Byron Carlisle and Bryan Difford teamed up with redshirt sophomore Cameron Sellers and freshman Max Kerwick for a third place finish after touching at 1:35.74.

Sellers would go on to post two more victories over the course of the meet. He touched first in the 200 free after swimming in 1:40.88, and later struck gold in the 500 free, finishing at 4:37.18. Sellers was one of four Tiger swimmers to win multiple events on the day.

Sophomore Spenser Lauver followed the relay by posting a new personal best in the 1000 free, taking gold after finishing in 9:30.11, beating out Southern Illinois' Matt Parsons by just .02. The time beat out Lauver's own personal record by over 4.5 seconds, and is now the sixth-fastest time in Missouri history.

"The 1000 free was a great race," said Hoffer. "The two guys were hammering each other for 975 yards and it came down to the touch at the end. It was a lot of fun."

In the 100 breast, junior Martin Cernansky and senior Ted Harris posted a 1-2 finish. Cernansky led the way with a time of 57.40, with Harris finishing at 58.23

Cernansky would also win the 200 breast, dominating the event in a time of 2:04.01, three seconds faster than the runner-up. Cernansky's sweep through the dual's breaststroke events marked his fourth and fifth victories on the season.

Senior Gilad Kaufman and sophomore Jordan Hawley were the other two Tiger swimmers to earn multiple wins on the night. Kaufman took top honors in the 100 fly (50.20) and 200 fly (1:51.70), while Hawley would claim first in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, posting times of 21.17 and 46.65, respectively.

Following Hawley's win in the 100 free, freshman Jan Konarzewski would win his third event on the season, swimming to a first place time of 1:50.98.

Junior Greg DeStephen shined for the Tigers in the diving well, sweeping both events. DeStephen posted a new personal best and the second-highest score ever at Mizzou in the 3-meter, landing a score of 377.77. Earlier in the meet, DeStephen would take gold in the 1-meter with a score of 320.47. Sophomore Dante Jones finished second in both events, scoring 308.25 in the 1-meter and 319.50 in the 3-meter.
