Missouri State Dominates on Night Three of Missouri Valley

Missouri State showed why they have won the last eight Missouri Valley Championship titles on Friday night. They won the first three events as well as the 400 medley relay on the third night of the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Championships.

Rebecca Amparano of Missouri State defended her 400 IM title with a 4:18.32 with a conference record and B cut in the event. She led a sweep with Josie Pearson of Missouri State in second at 4:20.10 and Briana Horozewski of Missouri State in third at 4:20.79 to give the Bears a big lead over host Southern Illinois.

There was another tight race in the 100 fly as Missouri State’s Emma Wall came out on top with a 55.82. She edged out Northern Iowa’s Crystal Florman at 56.22 and Southern Illinois’ Emma Brazeau at 56.30.

In the 200 free, Southern Illinois placed four in the top eight but it was Missouri State’s Dora Kiss that came out on top. Kiss won with a 1:48.38 ahead of Southern Illinois’ Kelsie Walker and Bryn Handley at 1:48.72 and 1:50.83.

Northern Iowa has been one of the most spirited teams on deck during the meet. They have picked up two relay wins and have been dangerous in every event because they have momentum on their side. Junior Veronica Herrmann kept that momentum going with a win in the 100 breast at 1:01.99 for a B cut. She edged out defending champion Lauren Pavel of Missouri State at 1:02.03. Rachel Holm of Illinois State was third at 1:03.14.

One of the other teams that always is having a good time is Evansville. The Purple Aces have been one of the most spirited teams throughout the weekend and they picked up a win in the 100 back. Michaela Kent won the race at 55.53 out-touching Loretta Stelnicki of Missouri State at 55.59 and Sydney Zupan (Missouri State) and Sarah James at 55.69 (Southern Illinois).

Missouri State finished off the night with a win in the 400 medley relay. It was the eighth year in a row that the Bears won that relay. Zupan (56.15), Pavel (1:02.43), Kiss (54.39) and Stelnicki (50.69) won with a 3:43.66. They were pushed by Northern Iowa as they finished second at 3:44.83. Southern Illinois was third at 3:47.77.

Missouri State extended its lead with 534 points after three days. Southern Illinois is second at 496.5 and Northern Iowa is third at 408.
