Michigan State vs. Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 28. THE No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women’s swimming and diving team took down another rival on Friday (Jan. 28), crushing Michigan State, 141-93, at the Charles McCaffree Pool. With the win, Michigan is now 32-2 all-time against the Spartans in dual meets.

The Wolverines had the top time in every swimming event of the night; U-M exhibitioned the final two events (100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard freestyle relay), which resulted in automatic victories for the Spartans, regardless of Michigan’s times.

Sophomores Kally Fayhee (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) and Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) each won two events on the night. Fayhee placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.10) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:18.13), while Bicek took the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.68) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.16).

Other individual event winners included sophomore Mattie Kukors (Auburn, Wash./Mountainview) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.67), junior Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) in the 50-yard freestyle (23.95), junior Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) in the 100-yard butterfly (55.50) and sophomore Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) in the 100-yard backstroke (59.16). The Wolverines also won the 200-yard medley relay to kick off the meet (1:44.62).

Over in the diving well, freshman Erin Bridgewater (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) recorded her highest score (269.54) and place (second) on the one-meter board, while senior Rachael Ropeik (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) scored a career-high 331.13 on the three-meter board to lead the Wolverines. Michigan State diver Sarah Clay took first place off both springboards.

The Wolverines close out the regular season tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 29), when they host No. 25 Penn State inside Canham Natatorium. The meet will serve as Senior Day and begin at 11 a.m. It will run alongside the second day of the men’s swimming and diving quad meet.
