Michigan Quad Meet: Michigan Men, Texas Women Win, Connor Jaeger Sets Pool Record

ANN ARBOR – The two-day University of Michigan quad meet came to a close this afternoon in exciting fashion, as the Michigan men’s swimming and diving team clinched dual meet victories over Texas (183-170), Louisville (237-116) and Indiana (242.5-110.5) with a win in the final relay. Texas defeated Louisville (217-136) and Indiana (222-131), while Indiana topped Louisville (186.5-166.5).

In the women’s meet, Texas won all three of their dual meet matchups against Michigan (199-154), Louisville (243.5-109.5) and Indiana (204.5-148.5). Michigan beat Louisville (232.5-120.5) and Indiana (179-174), while Indiana topped Louisville (210-143).

Michigan post-grad swimmer Connor Jaeger provided some fireworks today as well when he broke the pool record in the 1000 free with an 8:41.09, the second-best time in history in that event behind Erik Vendt’s 8:36.49 from 2008. Michael McBroom, Cody Miller, Joao De Lucca, Michael Klueh and Emily Brunemann were a few other notable post-grad swimmers who attended the meet.

The Wolverines kicked off the second day of racing with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Aaron Whitaker, Bruno Ortiz, Dylan Bosch and Paul Powers posted the first sub-1:27 swim of the year at 1:26.96. Michigan’s B team of Pete Brumm, Richard Funk, Jeremy Raisky and Vinny Tafuto touched second in 1:27.45, giving Michigan the two fastest performances of the season.

In the 200 back, Texas’ Jack Conger improved upon his fastest time of the season with a 1:45.18, the second-best time in the country. Louisville’s Grigory Tarasevich touched second in 1:46.30. Texas picked up a second consecutive win in the next event, as Brett Ringgold topped the 100 free field in 44.11, just a tenth in front of Indiana’s Anze Tavcar (44.21).

The Longhorns went three-for-three in individual events as Will Licon swam the fastest time in Division I in the 200 breast at 1:57.11. Georgia’s Chase Kalisz had the previous top time of 1:57.48. Michigan’s Richard Funk finished second today in 1:58.80. Jonathan Roberts kept the ball rolling for Texas with a 4:21.84 in the 500 free, the best time in the country this season. North Carolina State’s Anton Ipsen was previously ranked first at 4:22.03. Anders Nielsen of Michigan finished well back in 4:26.37.

The men’s 100 fly final came down to the last few yards, with another Texas swimmer getting to the wall first. Joseph Schooling just out-touched Michigan teammates Pete Brumm (47.93) and Aaron Whitaker (47.96) with a 47.92. Will Licon of Texas picked up his second win of the night, touching in 3:50.49 to edge Michigan’s Dylan Bosch (3:50.69) in the 400 IM.

Indiana’s Michael Hixon finally broke the Texas winning streak with a victory in the 3-meter diving event. Hixon totaled 394.45 points to get by Texas’ Mark Anderson (386.80).

With the meet outcome on the line, Michigan’s foursome of Justin Glanda, Anders Nielsen, Paul Powers and Bruno Ortiz out-raced Texas’ Brett Ringgold, Matt Ellis, Jack Conger and Kip Darmody, 2:55.47 to 2:56.12, giving the Wolverines the advantage in their head-to-head matchup.

Sarah Denninghoff, Gretchen Jaques, Brynne Wong and Rebecca Millard gave the Longhorn women a win in the opening event as the quartet topped the 200 medley relay in 1:40.81. Louisville’s Tanja Kylliainen, Andee Cottrell, Kelsi Worrell and Maggie Patterson finished about half a second behind in 1:41.32.

Indiana’s Brooklynn Snodgrass lowered her own season best and nation-leading time in the 200 back this afternoon with a 1:53.29, comfortably in front of Michigan’s Clara Smiddy (1:55.78). Snodgrass’ previous top time had been a 1:53.97 from the Indiana-Auburn dual meet.

Michigan’s Ali DeLoof topped the women’s 100 free field in 50.03, just ahead of Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell (50.16). Gretchen Jaques of Texas swept the breaststroke events at the meet with a 2:13.85 in the 200 breast. Michigan freshman Emily Kopas snuck into second at 2:14.46, just ahead of Texas’ Bethany Leap (2:14.71).

Kennedy Goss of Indiana won the 500 free in 4:46.92, with Michigan’s Gillian Ryan in second at 4:47.32. In the 100 fly, Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell posted a 53.46, well off her season best of 52.12 from last week’s SMU Classic. Kelsey Leneave of Texas came in second with a 54.16. Texas’ Madisyn Cox swept the IM events this weekend with a 4:14.51. Dorina Szekeres of Indiana claimed second in 4:19.07.

Texas went 1-2-3 in the women’s 1-meter diving event, with Emma Ivory-Ganja leading the way with 301.85 points. Meghan Houston (290.60) and Murphy Bromberg (290.35) finished second and third.

Indiana wrapped up the meet with the fastest time of the season in the 400 free relay as Kennedy Goss, Brooklynn Snodgrass, Haley Lips and Grace Vertigans touched in 3:20.45 to knock off Auburn’s 3:21.22. Michigan’s Gillian Ryan, Zoe Mattingly, Ali DeLoof and Clara Smiddy touched second in 3:21.53.
