Miami Falls to Western Kentucky, 130-113

OXFORD, Ohio, November 4. IN a bit of déjà vu, sophomore Chris Heaton reset the varsity 3-meter diving record for the second straight meet but the Miami University men's swimming and diving team (1-1) fell, 130-113, to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a non-conference dual meet.

After resetting his own 3-meter diving score against Ball State last night, Heaton outdid himself Saturday against Western Kentucky, turning in a first-place 3-meter score of 360.00. With his performance, Heaton smashed his previous personal-best of 344.85 set les than 24 hours earlier. Heaton also took home a first-place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 316.72.

Three RedHawks posted a pair of individual wins, including Heaton's sweep of the boards, but Western Kentucky held on for the 27-point win. Senior Paul Ricard and junior Ryan McHugh joined Heaton with two wins apiece, as Miami posted first-place finishes in eight of the 13 events.

Western Kentucky opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 400 medley relay, but Miami Ricard responded with a first-place time of 9:24.49 in the 1,000 freestyle. The RedHawks could not string back-to-back wins together, however, as the Hilltoppers placed the top three swimmers in the 200 freestyle and jumped out to a 40-15 lead.

Miami battled back and had the top two finishers in the 50 freestyle, placing McHugh and junior Theo Kuczek first (21.58) and second (21.81), respectively, but Western Kentucky finished 1-2 in the 200 individual medley and notched another win in the 200 butterfly. McHugh then added his second win of the meet with a first-place time in the 100 freestyle (46.22), but another 1-2 Western Kentucky finish in the 200 backstroke stretched the Hilltoppers lead to 102-67.

Ricard notched his second win of the meet in the 500 freestyle with a first-place time of 4:36.72, and senior Griffin Marshall made it back-to-back wins with his top time of 2:07.48 in the 200 breaststroke. Trailing 124-102 heading into the final relay event, Miami placed first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:08.43) but could not close the gap in the standings.
