Mexican Nationals Features Event Sweeps, Acts as Worlds Qualification

The 2015 Mexican Nationals ran last week into the weekend (June 29 – July 3) in Guadalajara. The nation’s swimmers met for some fierce competition as several athletes used this meet as an opportunity to collect cuts for the upcoming 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

The women’s side saw two different athletes pull off hat tricks at the event, with both grabbing three wins each. Estela Davis Ortiz from Club Chihuahua was dominant in the backstroke events, nabbing first in the 50m (30.14), 100m (1:03.88) and 200m backstrokes (2:17.07). Ana Daniela Carrillo Avilez from Estado de Mexico continued the trend by being equally dominant in the breaststroke events. Avilez won the 50m breaststroke in 33.52, the 100m breaststroke in 1:10.64, and the 200m breaststroke in 2:36.22.

On the men’s side, 24-year old Alejandro Escudero Alvarez pulled off a hat trick of his own in multiple disciplines. Alvarez came away wins in three sprint events, capturing two butterfly events along with the 50m freestyle. He won the 50m butterfly in 25.09, the 100m butterfly in a time of 55.02, and added a win in the 50 freestyle with a 23.54.

Horus Briseno Ramirez from Aguascalientes was the national title winner in two backstroke events, taking the 100m in 58.00 and the 200m in 2:05.51. Luis Enrique Campos Alpizar from Jalisco also collected two wins, taking the 100m freestyle in a time of 51.57 and the 200m freestyle in 1:52.86.
