Men’s Big Ten Conference Championships, Day Four

IOWA CITY, Iowa, February 25. THE No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team led wire to wire en route to capturing its 36th Big Ten championship on Saturday (Feb. 25) inside Iowa's Campus Wellness and Recreation Center. U-M used final-day victories from sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) in the mile and senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) in the 200-yard butterfly.

Michigan began its title defense in the mile with a 1-2-3 finish, as Jaeger won the first individual Big Ten championship of his career with a pool record of 14:43.64 after collecting runner-up finishes in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. He was followed by the 2011 champion, sophomore Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn./McCallie School), who finished in second with a 14:45.08 and junior Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y./Rye), who took third with a 14:45.23.

Following Michigan's eighth runner-up finish of the championship by freshman Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Stratchcona) — in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:56.57) — Madwed made history, winning the 200-yard butterfly for the third time in his career with a pool-record 1:42.67. He was the lead of a three-headed Michigan monster that went 1-2-3 in the event as sophomore's Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy) took second (1:43.50) and third (1:43.83) in the race, respectively, marking the third time at the championships that U-M has swept the top three spots in an event.

Following sophomore Jack Lee (North Egremont, Mass./Berkshire School) placing eighth on the platform competition with a score of 324.000, U-M sealed Big Ten championship No. 36 with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of freshmanBruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), juniorMiguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), junior Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) and Madwed clocking a 2:52.96 in Madwed's final race of his illustrious Big Ten Championships career.

Michigan wraps up its regular season with the Ohio State Last Chance Meet on Sunday, March 4, in Columbus, Ohio. The all-day meet will be held at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
