2019 ACC Men’s Swimming Championships: NC State Posts Three Top Seeds on Day Two

During the first full prelims session of the men’s ACC swimming championships, NC State was the dominant team, with Wolfpack swimmers recording the top qualifying time in all three events contested. NC State is bidding for its fifth straight conference title this week in Greensboro, N.C.

500 Free

NC State sophomore Eric Knowles posted the top qualifying mark in the 500 free, his time of 4:13.79 putting him a half-second ahead of Virginia’s Brendan Casey (4:14.30). Louisville’s Marcelo Acosta qualified third in 4:14.96, and then there was a gap back to the rest of the field.

Virginia Tech’s Lane Stone was fourth in 4:16.26, followed by Notre Dame’s Zach Yeadon in 4:16.75. NC State’s Gil Kiesler (4:16.92) and John McIntyre (4:17.73) qualified sixth and seventh, respectively, to join Knowles in the final, and Virginia’s Sam Magnan finished eighth in 4:17.83 to join Casey.

200 IM

NC State’s Andreas Vazaios will go for a third consecutive conference title in the 200 IM after the senior qualified first for the final in 1:42.39, about a second ahead of Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis (1:43.34). Virginia’s Ted Schubert (1:43.49) and Louisville’s Daniel Sos (1:43.74) took third and fourth, respectively.

Virginia Tech teammates Samuel Tornqvist (1:43.75) and Norbert Szabo (1:43.85) and Virginia’s Bryce Keblish (1:43.98) also broke 1:44, and another Cavalier, Zach Fong, took eighth in 1:44.34.

NC State’s Justin Ress put up a 19.14 to lead the way in the 50 free prelims, three hundredths ahead of Florida State’s Will Pisani (19.17). The Wolfpack put four swimmers total in the A-final, with Nyls Korstanje (19.31), Giovanni Izzo (19.53) and Cobe Garcia (19.56) joining Ress.

Louisville’s Andrej Barna took fourth in 19.33, followed by Pitt’s Blaise Vera (19.34) and Virginia Tech’s Ian Ho (19.50) in fifth and sixth, respectively.
