Maxine Parker Drops 56.48 To Win 100 Free On Night Two of Pleasant Prairie Sectionals

Night two finals of the 2018 Spring Speedo Sectionals stop at Pleasant Prairie was full of tough competition and fast swimming. Events included the 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter breaststroke, 100-meter freestyle, and the 200-meter IM.

The highlight of the evening was 15-year-old Maxine Parker of Cats, who had two big time drops to catapult her into first place in the women’s 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle. Her time of 56.48 won the 100m freestyle by over two seconds and would have ranked 12th in senior (13-35) LC top times for the 2016-2017 season.

Ruby Martin, swimming unattached, also won two events, the women’s 400-meter freestyle and 200-meter IM.

Justin Alderson of Peoria Area Water Wizards competed and placed in the top eight in three back-to-back events, winning the third.

After the second night of finals competition, Barrington Swim Club sits in first place with 402.5 points to Phoenix Swimming’s runner-up point total of 363. Colorado Stars sit in third with 222 total team points.

Women’s 400 Freestyle

Ruby Martin, swimming unattached, won the women’s 400-meter freestyle by a large margin, touching in 4:19.27 to second-place Maggie Emary‘s time of 4:23.16. Emary’s second-place finish is her second of the meet already, as the Barrington Swim Club senior notched silver in the women’s 800-meter freestyle last night. Third place went to her teammate Bridget O’Leary in 4:25.30.

Emily Ecker of Portland Porpoise Swim Club and winner of the 800 last night, put up a fourth-place time of 4:26.86. Fifth place went to 13-year-old Scarlet Martin, also swimming unattached, with her time of 4:28.37, a whopping 10-second drop from her entry time.

Meghan Susil of Eastern Iowa Swim Federation (4:29.19), Isabelle Pelka of Patriot Aquatic Club (4:29.43), and Carol-lena Breiter of Phoenix Swimming (4:31.33) rounded out the top eight finishers in the competitive event.

Men’s 400 Freestyle

Chicago Wolfpack Aquatic Club’s Jacob Furlong dominated the men’s event in a similar fashion, winning in over 6 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. His time of 4:01.24 was good for first place over 800 runner-up out of Fond Du Lac Swim Club Christian Hedeen‘s time of 4:07.48. Dylan Moffatt from Black Hawk Area Swim Team was third in 4:10.52.

Fourth place was snagged by Trever Brenner of Sioux Falls Swim Team with his time of 4:12.88, while his teammate Damon Venner was close behind in 4:13.55 for fifth.

Patriot Aquatic Club’s Nathan Gates touched in 4:15.40 for sixth, while Brimwin Peabody of Portland Porpoise Swim Club’s time of 4:16.06 was good for seventh. Blake Wilton of the Colorado Stars snuck into eighth with a 4:16.68.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Maxine Parker of Cats Aquatic Team had a huge prelims to finals drop to shoot up from third place, touching in 1:04.54 for the win. Second place went to Patriot’s Ashley Carollo in 1:04.94, while third place was awarded to Malia Francis of Woodson Y Northern with her time of 1:05.25. 12-year-old Elmbrook Swim Team ace Margaret Wanezek was not far behind in 1:05.62 for fourth.

Emily Clements of Phoenix Swimming touched in 1:06.67 for fifth, just ahead of sixth-place Isabel Veliz of Chicago Wolfpack in 1:06.75.

Patriot’s Sophia Goushchina (1:07.06) and Arabella Shepard (1:07.18) of USS Destroyer completed the championship heat of swimmers.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Bloomington Normal Swim Club’s Brett Spires held off the competition in the men’s final heat of the 100 backstroke, sprinting to a quick 57.78 for the win. Second place went to Chicago Wolfpack’s Jaden Olson in 58.62, while his teammate Tadzio Kurka also made it onto the podium with a 59.22. Colorado Stars’ Blake Wilton was the only other competitor under the 1:00 mark in 59.86 for fourth place.

Liam Bergerson of Blackline Aquatics was just over in 1:00.06 for fifth place, ahead of a tie for sixth place between Fond Du Lac Swim Club’s Andrew Rodriguez and Bloomington Normal Swim Club’s Andy Ritsema in 1:00.31. Eighth place went to Brian Tabourot of Cats in a 1:00.92.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

The women’s 100-meter breaststroke was a nail-biting race, with the top three finishers going head-to-head into the finish. Catherine Kitzman of Barrington Swim Club came out on top by a hair, touching in 1:13.00 to second-place Vanessa Herrmann of AquaStar’s 1:13.03. The bronze went to Allegra Walker of Phoenix Swimming in 1:13.83.

Fourth place was claimed by Hannah Liu of Patriot Aquatic Club in 1:14.46, followed by Lillian Culp of Bloomington Normal in 1:15.97 for fifth.

AquaStar’s Carly Palmer (1:16.06), Patriot’s Drew Petereit (1:16.13), and Highland Park Aquatics Club’s Rachel Wander (1:16.73) rounded out the top eight finishers in the competitive event.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Maxwell Reich of Phoenix Swimming won the men’s 100-meter breaststroke in a 1:04.97, ahead of Forrest Frazier, swimming unattached, in 1:05.82 for second place. Pace Swimming’s Caleb Babb won third place with a 1:06.24. Justin Alderson of Peoria Area Water Wizards came in fourth in 1:07.00.

Fifth place went to Max Iida of Glenview Titan Aquatic Club in 1:07.17, followed by Rodriguez in his second top eight finish of the evening. Rodriguez touched in 1:09.00 for sixth place.

Harrison Fudge of Bloomington Normal (1:09.08) and Jayden Porter of AquaStar (1:09.49) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

15-year-old Parker dropped another chunk of time in her second event of the evening to win the women’s 100-meter freestyle in over two seconds, stopping the clock in 56.48. Second-place O’Leary touched in 58.52. Third place went to Northern Lights Swimming Association’s Grace Lingle in 59.27.

Scarlet Martin touched in 59.65 for fourth, while Ecker put up a strong time of 59.82 for fifth.

Sixth-place Lexi Kucera of High Tides Swim Club and seventh-place Pelka were also under the 1:00 mark, finishing in 59.88 and 59.90, respectively.

Eighth place went to Chicago Wolfpack’s Anna Peterson in 1:00.25.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Topher Stensby of Patriot Aquatic Club won the men’s sprint event by the same margin as Parker, touching in 51.11 to second-place Chicago Wolfpack’s Bence Szabados‘s 52.14. Third place went to Szabados’s teammate Parker Nolan in 52.24.

Jacob Shapiro of Glenview Titan Aquatic Club touched in 52.96 for fourth place, followed by Brenner in 53.42. Niccolo Comini of Cats finished in 53.95 for sixth place honors.

Alderson (54.28) and Ezra Mizgala of Chicago Wolfpack (54.69) finished in seventh and eighth place to round out the championship final.

Women’s 200 IM

The women’s 200-meter IM showcased a remarkable amount of depth in the distance swimmers of the evening. Martin dominated her second event of the finals session, finishing just over two seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Her time of 2:20.95 bested second-place Clements’ time of 2:23.04. Third place went to Linn-Mar Swim Team’s Hayley Kimmel in 2:24.04.

Emary showed her depth as well, finishing in 2:25.22 for fourth place. Piranhas Swim Club’s Olivia Staver put up a 2:26.21 for fifth, while Hermann finished in 2:27.24 for sixth.

Culp (2:27.47) and Walker (2:28.07) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Men’s 200 IM

The last event of the evening saw many familiar faces, with Alderson putting up the winning time of 2:10.13 after having swum (and finished in the top eight) in the two preceding events. Phoenix’s Maxwell Reich touched in 2:10.58 for second place ahead of Iida and his third-place time of 2:12.38.

Frazier’s time of 2:12.98 was good for fourth place, while Dillon Cherwin of the Elgin Cyclones touched in 2:14.46 for fifth.

Babb (2:15.48), Jack Carignan of Phoenix (2:16.00) and Calvin Schilz of the Howard Suamico Storm Breakers (2:16.10) rounded out the top eight competitors in the event.
