After winning the 50 backstroke on night two of the 2019 FINA Champions Series in Indianapolis, Matt Grevers took time to recap and evaluate his meet in a post-race interview.

While Grevers said he was happy with the win, he was also impressed with his 200 backstroke time being under two minutes (1:59.47). He noted that this range will help him at the upcoming World Championships, a meet which he has been able to train strategically and specifically for since qualifying last September.

Characteristically, Grevers had a variety of positive comments to make including thoughts on the upcoming arrival of his second child and the benefits of the FINA Champions Series:

“I think it’s going to keep old guys like me in the game. I think someone will tally the money but this is incredible money for me from just a couple of meets. It really will keep people in that maybe couldn’t continue swimming financially. It’s really great for swimmers that are super passionate about the sport but are worried about supporting their families. This is a nice event for us.”

When asked if he would continue participating in the event in the coming years Grevers said, “Until they kick me out.”
