Matt Grevers Double Dips With Two Golds at Southwest Classic

TUCSON, Arizona, June 6. TUCSON’s own Matt Grevers powered his way to a pair of quick wins at the Southwest Classic tonight.

He kicked off his succesful night in the men’s 100-meter free with a win as he clocked a 50.53. Santa Clara’s Sam Shimomura placed second to the Olympic gold medalist with a 52.11, just off his personal best of 52.08 from the Arena Grand Prix stop in Mesa. Tucson Ford’s Trey Cashion claimed third in 53.21

Grevers returned for more gold, this time in the men’s 200-meter back when he clocked a 2:03.52 for the win. He downed French backstroker Eric Ress, now representing the Santa Clara Swim club, who took second overall in 2:03.96. It was a friendly in-season battle for the two, considering both have been in the 1:57 range in their careers. Michael Meyer of Tucson Ford rounded out the top three in 2:06.93.

Tucson Ford’s Margo Geer lit up the women’s 100-meter free finale with a 56.54, winning the race by more than a second. Meanwhile, Sarah Shimomura, 16, of Santa Clara Swim Club nearly posted a lifetime best with a second-place time of 57.65. That’s just off her personal record of 57.37 clocked at the Arena Grand Prix stop in Mesa. Teammate Courtney Monsees took third overall in 57.90.

Tucson Ford’s Elizabeth Pepper edged out FAST’s Bailey Nero, 2:17.40 to 2:17.70, for the women’s 200-meter fly crown, while WETT’s Sydney Hirschi hit the wall in 2:18.32 for third overall in the event. In another close contest, Michael Messner clipped Gold’s Mark Jurek, 2:06.11 to 2:06.35, in the men’s 200-meter fly in a battle of the teens. Messner, 17, dropped three seconds from his personal best of 2:09.89, while 16-year-old Mark Jurek has already been 2:04.63 in his career. Santa Clara’s Aidan Burns grabbed third in 2:08.51.

A day after winning the men’s 1500-meter freestyle, Burns collected his second freestyle victory in Tucson with a 4:02.64 to top the men’s 400-meter free. Michael Nunan checked in with a second-place 4:02.66, while Michael Messner snagged third in 4:03.73.
