Maryland, Richmond, Villanova vs. Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 14. JUNIOR Hussein Medhat-Mohamed won two events this weekend, guiding the University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team to a 193.5-159.5 victory over Maryland Saturday afternoon at Trees Pool. The Panthers improved to 4-3 in dual-meet competition this season.
In just his second meet after returning from a shoulder injury, Medhat-Mohamad was named the Pitt Performer of the Meet after capturing first in the 200 free (1:40.50) and 500 free (4:39.67) this afternoon. Last night he finished second in the 100 free.

"Our men gave up points that we should have won on the second day," head coach Chuck Knoles said. However, they also gained experience in how to fight back. Thanks to Hussein, we closed the door against a future ACC opponent after sweeping the 500 free. Hussein was phenomenal this weekend."

Medhat-Mohamed was the first of three Panthers to touch the wall in the 500 free. Completing the sweep was sophomore Alexander Rodenkirk (4:39.89) and senior Morne Boshoff (4:40.38). Rodenkirk was also second in the 200 free (1:41.12).

Medhat-Mohamed and Rodenkirk made up half of the first-place 400 free relay team that posted a time of 3:03.19. Leading off was senior Jake Van Roekel and junior Otto Pagel swam the second leg.

Earlier in the meet, Pagel anchored the 400 medley relay team to a meet crown at 3:21.77. The squad consisted of junior Adam Maczewski, senior Ben Solari, freshman Kourosh Ahani and Pagel.

Individually, Maczewski won the 200 back with a season-best performance of 1:50.07.

In the 200 fly, freshman Jon Lierly finished second (1:51.67) and senior Rousseau Kluever finished third (1:52.46).

Freshman Luke Nosbisch and Solari placed second (2:04.12) and third (2:08.12) in the 200 breast.

Later, both Ahani and Nosbisch turned in third-place performances in the 50 free (21.38) and 200 IM (1:57.61), respectively.

In diving, junior Erik Moore scored 270.10 points and sophomore Aaron Snyder posted 263.85 for second and third on the 1M board.

Pitt will take a brief break from competition before facing Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Junior Joanna Budzis led the University of Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team with three individual first-place performances to earn wins over Richmond (240-113) and Villanova (244-109) Saturday afternoon at Trees Pool. Pitt, however, dropped a 222-131 decision to Maryland and holds a 4-5 record in dual-meet competition this season.
Named the Pitt Performer of the Meet, Budzis won the 400 IM (4:22.14) last night. She returned this morning and captured first in both the 200 IM (2:05.48) and 200 back (2:00.80) events.

"Joanna had a great meet," head coach Chuck Knoles said. "It was good to see her win those three events. Overall, the women stepped up this weekend against three strong opponents. They performed better than they did last week and made it look easy. We are proud of them."

Budzis would later anchor the 400 free relay team to a second-place finish (3:29.74). Joining Budzis on the relay was freshmen Dani des Tombe and Lauren Mills and junior Kelsey Herbst.

Herbst and des Tombe also posted top-three performances in individual events. Herbst finished second in the 500 free, while des Tombe turned in a pair of third-place finishes in the 50 free (24.31) and 200 free (1:53.71).

Sophomore Veronica Lee touched for second in both the 200 breast (2:18.94) and 200 fly (2:04.71).

Lee was also the third leg of Pitt's 400 medley relay team that placed third with a time of 3:52.28. The squad consisted of sophomore Renee Deschenes, freshman Cam Dixon, Lee and freshman Lauren Mills (3:52.26).

In 3M diving, freshman Angelika McGhee and junior Brittany DiSanti finished second and third, respectively.

Others posting third-place finishes included freshman Emily Bolek (200 fly-2:06.11) and sophomore Lauren Matevish (500 free-5:01.58).

The Panthers will take a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Virginia.
