Martina Chalks Up 3 More Wins at World Cup in Edmonton

EDMONTON, Canada, Nov. 18. SLOVAKIA'S Martina Moravcova extended her unbeaten streak on the 2000-2001 FINA World Cup swimming circuit to 13, as she notched three more victories on the first night of competition of World Cup 3 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Moravcova, who won two silver medals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, stroked to victory tonight in the women's 200 meter (short course) freestyle (1:56.39), 100 meter butterfly (58.62) and 50 meter freestyle (24.97). She won five events each at the two previous stops on the circuit: in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and College Park, Maryland.

Canada's Brian Johns was the only other swimmer to win more than one event this evening, taking the men's 400 meter freestyle (3:58.57) and 100 meter individual medley (56.41).

Canada's Marianne Limpert, 28, clocked a strong 2:11.78 to win the women's 200 meter individual medley. Another Canadaian, Jennifer Fratesi, had an easy time in taking the women's 200 meter backstroke (2:09.79).

Germany's Sylvia Gerasch, 31, who won her first international title in 1986, powered her way to victory in the women's 100 meter breaststroke in 1:08.62.

The USA's Ed Moses, a silver medalist in the 100 meter breaststroke in Sydney, won the 50 meter breaststroke sprint tonight in 27.49.

The meet continues tomorrow evening.
