Michael Andrew, Margaret Aroesty Top 100 Breast Prelims Fields At Day Two of the 2016 NCSA Juniors

Fast swims in the 100 breaststroke highlighted prelims of day two at the 2016 NCSA Junior Nationals with Reece WhitleyMichael Andrew, and Margaret Aroesty throwing down fast times.

Aroesty held onto her number one psych sheet ranking in prelims, finishing almost two seconds ahead of the competition. The sixteen-year-old bypassed 59-seconds to stop the clock at a sizzling 58.98, dropping 1.02 seconds off her entry time of 1:00.00. York’s Jacqueline Clabeaux grabbed second overall with a time of 1:00.86, trimming .65 seconds of her entry time of 1:01.51, while Ingrid Wall of New Trier was third with a 1:01.45.

Andrew and Whitley went head to head in the 100 breaststroke to return as tonight’s top seeds. Andrew split a 24.48 and a 27.77 to finish with a time of 52.25 as the top seed for tonight’s final, while Whitley posted splits of 25.26 and 27.54 for a final 52.80. Neither swim was a personal best for Andrew or Whitley, but Andrew’s 51.75 NAG record sits only a half second away from Andrew’s prelim time.

Lucie Nordmann of Magnolia and Erin Earley of Hopkins Mariner grabbed the first and second-place seeds for tonight’s finals of the women’s 200 back with close times. Nordmann posted a time of 1:54.20 over Earley’s 1:54.29. Earley delivered a faster front half of the race with a split of 55.60 at the 100 over Nordmann’s 55.78, but a 58.42 from Nordmann in the second 100 bypassed Earley’s split of 58.69. Nation’s Capital’s Eireni Moshos rounded out the top three with a time of 1:55.20, dropping 2.08 seconds from her entry time of 1:57.28.

Metro Atlanta’s Dean Farris rocketed to the top of the rankings in the men’s 200 back with a time of 1:42.98. Farris dropped 2.34 from his entry time to separate himself from the competition. Returning in the second-place seed is NOVA’s Wade O’Brien with a 1:44.90, making him the only other athlete under the 1:45-mark. Matthew Marquardt of MHSW-OH rounded out the top three qualifiers with a 1:45.48.

Katherine Drabot of Ozaukee maintained her spot atop the 100 free rankings with a 49.15 in prelims. Drabot split a 23.87 and a 25.28 to return tonight as the top qualifier. Morgan Tankersley of GTSA-FL and Riley Gaines of XCEL-SE kept it close in prelims, turning in times a slim .06 seconds apart to return as second and third tonight. Tankersley turned in a time of 49.52, splitting 23.73 and 25.79, for second, while Gaines posted splits of 23.92 and 25.66 for a final 49.58.

After slicing 6.26 seconds off his entry time of 4:27.50, Talmadge Davis of Team Greenville moved from 15th to 1st in the men’s 500 free rankings with a final time of 4:21.24. James Murphy of Machine finished a close second in prelims with a time of 4:21.46, while NOVA’s Frederick Schubert posted a 4:21.51 for third.

Taylor Pike of Razorback Aquatic Club led the competition in prelims of the 200 fly, turning in a 1:55.57 to return as the top seed in tonight’s finals. Nation’s Capital’s Kylie Jordan delivered a 1:56.72 to claim second, shaving a total of 2.61 seconds off her entry time of 1:59.33. Wildcat Aquatics’ Azra Avdic finished third in prelims with a 1:57.59.

NOVA’s Schubert turned in another impressive swim in prelims of the men’s 200 fly, stopping the clock at 1:44.49 to take almost half a second off his entry time. Nation’s Capital’s Samuel Pomajevich joined him under the 1:45-mark with a time of 1:44.80, while Camden Murphy of Kingfish rounded out the top three with a 1:45.11.

Why no coverage of the 800 Free Relays? Prelims did not end with the 200 Fly
