Mack Horton Unloads Top-Ranked 3:41.65 400 Free in Australia

Mack Horton was the top of the class on day one of the 2016 Australian National Championships.

FINALS

Women’s 50 free multi-class

Ellie Cole won the women’s 50-meter free in the S9 division with a world record in the event.  She clocked a 28.75 that downed the previous mark of 29.12 set by Lin Ping in 2012.  Lake Patterson claimed second in 30.56 with Ashley McConell posting a third-place time of 29.52.

Daniel Fox and Mitchell Kilduff tied for the win with matching 24.67s.  Both swimmers are part of the S14 division.  Joshua Alford wound up third with a time of 25.18.

Men’s 400 IM

Thomas Fraser-Holmes raced his way to second in the world rankings in the men’s 400-meter IM with a time of 4:11.09.  Only Kosuke Hagino has been faster with a 4:08.90 from the Japanese National Championships.  Travis Mahoney, meanwhile, finished second in a time of 4:14.98.  Both of the top finishers cleared the FINA A cut of 4:16.71.

Clyde Lewis rounded out the top three in a time of 4:16.58.

Men’s 400 free

Mack Horton rocketed to the top of the world rankings with a blistering time of 3:41.65.  That lowered his previous lifetime best of 3:42.84 as he led a trio of Aussie men under the previous top-ranked time of 3:46.37 from Henrik Christiansen.

David McKeon raced his way to second with a time of 3:45.09, while Jack McLoughlin placed third in 3:46.27.  All of the top three swimmers cleared the FINA A cut of 3:47.19.  Grant Hackett, still looking to make a fourth Olympic team, took fourth in 3:48.84.

Women’s 400 IM

Blair Evans raced to fifth in the world rankings in the distance medley with a time of 4:35.26.  That’s better than her personal best of 4:36.21, and easily cleared the FINA A cut of 4:43.46.

Keryn McMaster turned in a second-place time of 4:37.94, while Ellen Fullerton took third in 4:39.72.  McMaster also beat the FINA A cut time.

Emily Seebohm topped the women’s 50-meter back in a time of 27.72 to move to second in the world behind only Minna Atherton’s 27.49.  Atherton, meanwhile, took second in 27.80 with Holly Barratt placing third in 27.90 to move to fifth in the world.

Emma McKeon led the way with a fifth-ranked time of 57.13 in the 100 fly.  That cleared her previous lifetime best of 57.24 as only four other swimmers have been faster than her this year.

Alicia Coutts qualified second with a time of 57.55, just off her season best of 57.53 that ranks ninth in the world.  Brianna Throssell picked up third in a time of 58.04.
