LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Kliment Kolesnikov Has Breakout 100 Back
This week’s Performance Of The Week, sponsored by LumaLanes, goes to Kliment Kolesnikov for his performance in the 100 backstroke at the 2017 European Short Course Championships.
Kolesnikov was absolutely on fire at the Euro Short Course Champs, seemingly setting a new record every time he touched the pool and leaving the meet with four gold medals and one silver. The 17-year-old set multiple world junior records over the course of the meet in the 50 free and 50 backstroke, but his most impressive swim had to be his gold medal swim in the 100 backstroke.
The young Russian broke his third world junior record of the meet in the semi-finals of the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 49.25 to shave more than half a second off of his existing record, before coming back in finals to shave another quarter of a second off the record with a 48.99. That gave Kolesnikov the gold by six-tenths of a second and put him just .04 away from the senior world record in the event.
Kolesnikov would end up leaving the meet with six world junior records across four events and a scary amount of potential over the next few years leading into 2020.
Congratulations Kliment Kolesnikov on earning Swimming World’s Performance of the Week!
