Loyola (Maryland), Navy vs. George Mason

FAIRFAX, Virginia, October 9. MATT Fralinger won the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, and Brennan Morris won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles and the 200-yard individual medley, helping the Loyola University Maryland men's swimming and diving team defeat host George Mason University, 194.5-103.5 on Saturday.

The Greyhounds men lost, however, in a tight race against the U.S. Naval Academy, 159-133. Loyola's women lost to George Mason, 164-134, and Navy, 235-65.

Caitlin Cronin won the 200-yard freestyle for the women, setting a school record in the process with a time of 1:53.75, edging Navy's Allison Ranzau by just over four tenths of a second.

"I was very pleased with today's results," Head Coach Brian Loeffler said. "Our teams are getting contributions from both the upperclassmen and new freshmen on the team."

Ozzy Torres was also an event winner for the men, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 51.41, while Tim Rowe and Jeff Rowe were third and fourth, respectively, in 53.43 and 53.71, respectively.

Loyola's men opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Sam McQuaid, Fralinger, Torres and Jeff Rowe swam 1:34.12 to beat second-place Navy by six tenths of a second.

Morris then was victorious in the 1,000 free, touching the wall in 9:29.40. Ryan Shovlin was sixth in 10:22.48.

Cronin was not the only Loyola woman to fare well in the 200 free. Erin Shea and Samantha Berizzi, also swimming in their first intercollegiate meet, took fourth and ninth, respectively in the event. Berizzi also took fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:58.03),
Scott Heil was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.62

Mary Henkels placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.57), while McQuaid was second on the men's side in the event (53.05).

Kim Krzaczek notched a fourth-place finish (1:08.87) in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Brittany Guinee was fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.01).

Torres took fifth, behind four Navy swimmers, in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.24), and Jeff Rowe and Ryan Leonard were third and sixth, respectively in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 21.76 and 22.35.

Cronin recorded a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.45), and she was third in the 100-yard freestyle (53.55).

Elizabeth Mixa had the best finishes for the women in diving, taking fifth in the 3-meter diving with 149.02 points. She then scored 192.52 to place fifth in the 1-meter diving.

Heil and Torres placed third and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.12 and 48.21. Patrick Mukri finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.17)

Courtney Trivino and Krzaczek finished fifth and sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:31.52 and 2:32.20. Caitlin Cassidy and Shea were fourth and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:00.37 and 1:01.06, respectively.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Saturday, October 23, when they host their annual Alumni Meet at 1 p.m. in the Mangione Aquatic Center.
