Louisville Women Defeat Vanderbilt, 124-84

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, January 12. THE University of Louisville women's swim team sank the Vanderbilt Commodores 124-84 in intercollegiate swimming action Friday evening in the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

U of L, swimming it its first dual meet since Nov. 11 and its first scored meet since Nov. 19, was trying to regain its competitive edge.

"We definitely accomplished what we were trying to accomplish which was to think about fast swimming – racing. It was a credit to our girls to stay focused and put together a great effort," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "Vanderbilt is a young team in its first year of competition so they will only get better as they gain collegiate meet experience."

The meet began with a sweep for the 200-medley relay team. The Cardinal A team of Alana Berrocal, Heather Meng, Liz Halet and Johanna Nyysti finished first with the B team of Karen Criss, Leigh Smith, Jenny Schimenti and Rebecca Clark finishing a close second. Vandy's A team of Rebecca Rogers, Laura Ballenger, Shannon McConnaughey and Kim Lesnick were the fastest for the Commodores.

In the 1000-free, Melanie Greyling was first with a time of 10:27.20, Laura Clark was second with a time of 10:56.12. Vandy did not enter a swimmer in this event.

In the women's 200-free, Anna Dishuck and Abby Jackson were the top two finishers for Uof L. Liz Halet was third with VU's Eileen Bouldin scored for the Commodores.

In the 50-free, Rebecca Clark touched first with a time of 24.63 with Kate Wilson hot in her wake for second. Sarah Treichel touched first for Vanderbilt with a time of 27.03.

In the 200-IM, Melanie Greyling was first in the 200-IM with a time of 2:08.45 with Heather Meng finishing second at 2:08.89. Rebecca Rogers scored for Vandy with a fourth place.

Sarah Sandroni scored a 178.10 to score first place points for the Cardinals on the 1-meter springboard. Marianne Bradford was second and Vandy's Erika Walston was third at 130.75. In the 3-meter event, Sarah Sandroni led with 211.60 in exhibition with VU's Erika Walston earning first place points with a socre of 126.65.

Kate Wilson took the 100-fly for the Cardinals with a time of 1:01.32 with Stephanie Osucha finishing second at 1:01.87. Jaclyn Steier was third and Vandy's Sarah Treichel touched at 1:06.47.

Alana Berrocal was first in the 100-free with a time of 54.76 with Emily Rabe in hot pursuit for second with a time of 55.93. Carolyn Coulson was the top VU's 59.67.

Anna Dishuck took the 100-back with a time of 1:00.73 with Jaclyn Steier finishing second at 1:04.95. Rebecca Rogers was the fastest VU swimmer.

Laura Ballenger from Vandy scored first place points in the 100-breast with a time of 1:19.27. Johanna Nyysti had the fastest time touching at 1:05.10.

In the final race, Vandy's A 200-free relay team earned first place points with a time 1:49.92. The foursome of Leigh Smith, Alana Berrocal, Jenny Schimenti and Larissa Niehoff turned in an exhibition time of 1:39.16.

"We needed to race. When you train and train, you lose your racing edge and this was a perfect meet to return to action before facing our conference rival, Cincinnati, tomorrow at 1 p.m." said Arthur Albiero.
