Louisville Cardinals Take First Ever NCAA Relay Title in School History With 200 Medley Relay Victory

The Louisville Cardinals won their first ever NCAA relay title on Friday night at the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships in Greensboro with a 1:22.11 in the 200 medley relay. The team of Mitchell Whyte (20.72), Evgenii Somov (22.87), Nick Albiero (20.07) and Haridi Sameh (18.45) won ahead of Florida (1:22.41) and California (1:22.43) as a lot of eyes were on the Texas – Cal battle that the Cardinals and Gators went out and finished ahead of those schools.

Florida has now finished top four in all four relays thus far with the team of Adam Chaney (20.55), Dillon Hillis (23.33), Eric Friese (19.87) and Will Davis (18.66) getting second here, adding to their second in the 200 free relay.

Cal tried closing the gap on the back half with Ryan Hoffer and Bjorn Seeliger but it was not enough as they did finish ahead of Texas, closing the gap to 42 points heading into tomorrow. Daniel Carr (20.79), Reece Whitley (23.57), Hoffer (19.70) and Seeliger (18.37) finished in third overall while Ohio State was fourth from the penultimate heat with Joseph Armstrong (20.75), Hudson McDaniel (22.70), Justin Fleagle (20.37) and Sem Andreis (18.67) at 1:22.49.

Texas (1:22.56), Michigan (1:22.81), Georgia (1:23.07) and Virginia (1:23.26) also finished in the top eight.

The quickest splits outside the top four came from NC State’s Kacper Stokowski (20.61), Michigan’s Will Chan (22.71), Pittsburgh’s Blaise Vera (19.52) and Michigan’s Gus Borges (18.49).

This is Louisville’s first ever relay title at NCAAs and also the first for the ACC in this event.
