Little Red Lighthouse Swim Set for Tomorrow

NEW YORK, NY., Sept. 20. ON September 21, The 7.8 mile Little Red Lighthouse Swim will be a featured part of the annual Little Red Lighthouse Festival.

The Festival, which will celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the children's book "The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge," by Hildegarde H. Swift with illustrations by Lynd Ward. The festival will feature activities for children, lighthouse tours, live music, celebrity readings by actor James Earl Jones and Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and more festival fun.

The 7.8 Mile swim will start at the Little Red Lighthouse at the George Washington Bridge, then proceed down the Hudson River and with the current to Hudson River Park's Pier 62 at 23rd Street. The official finish line is at the south-east side of Pier 62.

Time: 1:00 PM

Course: George Washington Bridge down the Hudson River and with the current to Hudson River Park, Pier 62 @ 23rd Street

Check In: 12:00 PM at the Little Red Lighthouse

Time Limit: 4 hours

Age Requirement: 15 years and over

Water Conditions: Approximately 74 degrees. There can be substantial amount of chop in the water from wind & tide action. The waterways are salt-water and there is shipping traffic. There may be random jetsam & flotsam in the waterways.

Did you know?
The little red lighthouse's actual name is the Jeffrey Hook's Lighthouse. It's the only lighthouse on the island of Manhattan. The lighthouse wasn't originally supposed to be in New York -it was built in 1880 to operate in Sandy Hook, NJ, but was relocated to New York.

The great gray bridge is the George Washington Bridge, which opened in 1932. Although it's been dark since 1947, in 2002 the lighthouse was outfitted with a new lens so that it could shine brightly once again.
