Lilly King Hits Another 1:05 100 Breast in Mission Viejo; Fink Takes Men’s Race With 59.7

Reigning Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Lilly King took care of business on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo with a 1:05.70 in the 100 breaststroke. King went faster in the heats last night with a 1:05.32 which is the fastest time in the world this year (tied with herself) ahead of this summer’s Olympics as King hasn’t been beaten internationally in the 100 breast since taking gold in 2016.

King finished ahead of 17-year-old Texas commit Lydia Jacoby (1:06.38), who scored a new best time in second place. Jacoby is a rising star in the sport from Alaska as she was the 2019 juniors champ and is finishing her junior year of high school before taking a stab at her first Olympic Trials.

Pan Am Games gold medalist Annie Lazor finished third at 1:06.86 ahead of Tennessee’s Molly Hannis (1:06.93) as this looked to be a preview of what is to come at Olympic Trials in June. Emily Escobedo, who will be dangerous in the 200, was fifth at 1:07.70 ahead of NCAA runner-up Kaitlyn Dobler (1:08.15), who was the juniors champ in 2018 and the national high school record holder in this event.

In the men’s race, Nic Fink was the only swimmer to break 1:00 in the final with a 59.74 as he went 1-2 with fellow Georgia swimmer Andrew Wilson (1:00.06). Fink is the fastest American this year as he is training for his first Olympic team at age 27. There were two other 27-year-olds in the field with Wilson and Kevin Cordes (1:01.19) in fifth as all three of them train with the postgrad group at the University of Georgia.

21-year-old Michael Andrew finished in third at 1:00.38 ahead of 23-year-old Tommy Cope (1:00.89). Andrew was the 2018 national champ in this event and also represented the US, along with Wilson, at the 2019 Worlds where he didn’t make it out of the heats in Gwangju.

Tennessee’s Michael Houlie, who led at the 50, faded to sixth at 1:01.39 as Cal’s Reece Whitley was seventh (1:01.59).
