After splitting a 56.17 in the 400 medley relay last night, Indiana sophomore Lilly King was looking to lower her NCAA and American Record she set last month at the Big Ten Championships. Ultimately, King fell short of the record, but defended her title from last year, becoming the first person to do so since Texas A&M’s Breeja Larson won three straight from 2012-2014.

The battle behind King was very tight as it was freshman Lindsey Horejsi in second at 58.03 and Virginia’s Laura Simon was third at 58.20. Horejsi is now the 8th fastest performer in history and Simon moves into a tie for 15th all time with Katie Meili. Florida State’s Natalie Pierce, who lost her cap before the 75 turn, ended up fourth at 58.25. Louisville’s Andrea Cottrell (58.39), Iowa’s Emma Sougstad (58.79), NC State’s Kayla Brumbaum (58.91) and Missouri’s Katharine Ross (59.05) completed the A-final.
